I've got a MSI 970A-G43 motherboard and the AMD FX-6300 cpu. The system is stable with the default settings. On the CPU box, it says that its unlocked out of the box with up to 8 cores, even though the CPU is sold as a 6 core processer. The motherboard manual documents how to unlock the CPU core by enabling a "CPU core unlock" feature in the overclocking settings of the bios. The trouble is that my bios doesn't show this option. (I'm running the latest bios revision AMI 10.3 if that helps).
Here's how I understand core unlocking (please correct me if I'm wrong):
1. AMD packages CPUs with say 8 cores as 6 core processors if those two cores didn't pass quality control.
2. Motherboard manufacturers realized that there is a market for enabling these cores since some of them operate fine even if they didn't pass muster at AMD
3. AMD sells more processors, and is supportive of this practice (though they disclaim liablity if the CPU is damaged because the end user enabled a disabled core)
The Motherboard box says you can unlock, the CPU box says that its already unlocked, so why have I only got 6 cores instead of 8? Does the fact that the "CPU core unlock" option is missing mean that my processor's disabled cores are really defective?
Additional questions: will I need aftermarket cooling if I enable to two remaining cores? Is unlocking the cpu cores "safer" than overclocking the CPU itself?
Thanks for any advice!
