Question MSI 970A Krait not recognizing new SATA devices

I have a very strange issue with a new-old MSI 970A Krait which has left me seriously bemused.

I bought this motherboard barely-used a couple months ago. It's been working fine with no issues, until I decided to install another hard drive. It didn't recognize the hard drive in Windows, so I rebooted to BIOS. It didn't recognize it there either.

I unplugged the two old hard drives and ran it with the SSD alone, no luck. I unplugged the SSD as well, still no luck.

I then tried using an optical drive instead of a hard drive. This also wasn't recognized. I then tried another hard drive, no luck there either.

I tried flashing the BIOS to the latest version (it recognized a new USB drive just fine), but still no success.

The old hardware (two HDD and one SSD) continue to work fine when plugged in and out, and on all the ports.

Nothing has changed since my stock build except I did remove one memory stick for a few days to test another PC. When I replaced the memory stick it initially didn't recognize it in the BIOS, which was weird, but when I went into BIOS, didn't change any settings, and restarted the computer, it recognized it again.

Update: New SATA hardware works with a molex connector (instead of SATA power). See below...

Other things I've tried:

Different SATA cables / ports, including ones tested as working (old hardware works on port just fine)
Different output from modular PSU
Different sata power cable from modular PSU
Swapping memory to different slot
Setting SATA ports to "hot-swappable" in the BIOS (and back)
Setting SATA to IDE mode (and back to AHCI)
Various other BIOS settings.

I haven't tried:

Reinstalling Windows, but if they're not being recognized in the BIOS, I'm not sure how this would do anything.

Current specs / status (running off one memory stick instead of two for a moment, going to try alternate memory and see if that helps):

Nothing is overclocked (although the GPU has a stock overclock).

Update: tried different memory, no luck there either.
Update2: tried yet another hard drive but with a molex power connector rather than a SATA one. It works! So this seems to be a power allocation error of some kind. No idea how to fix it, though.
Update3: the hard drive with the molex connector now works on SATA. None of the other drives do. Possibilities: I have three dead drives, or my SATA power is all over the place.

It seems you are experiencing a loss of power. With a used motherboard, replace the coin cell battery. See if you can borrow a different power supply -

I'm running off a five-month-old 750 W PSU. I could try it with the 600 W PSU in my other PC, but I'll try replacing the battery first.

I did try unplugging all the drives and simply plugging in the optical drive and the other unrecognized drives off a working SATA port in turn, without any luck. Meanwhile the two old drives are running fine when they're plugged back in, along with the molex drive (an ancient server-class Hitachi which is particularly greedy).
