MSI Afterburner Won't Open

I tried to install MSI afterburner 4.2.0 so I can use the frame limiter in Fallout 4 (I get really bad input lag with v-sync. Also when using v-sync, I am capped at 50 fps with my 144 hz monitor. If I set the monitor to 60 hz, I am met with a frame rate of 30 fps). However, when I run afterburner or Rivatuner, neither will open. I am met with a blank desktop. Both are running in task manager. I usually use Precision X for my overclocking needs but I wanted to try afterburner for fallout. I have uninstalled Precision X.

I have used afterburner with success (only the frame limiter) before so it works on my computer. I have also reinstalled it multiple times trying to get it to work today.

My setup is:
EVGA GTX 970
i5-4690k
Logitech headset and mouse
Asus Sabertooth MK 2

Thank you!

I don't think so. I currently use two monitors but I have re positioned them. I put my second monitor back to the right of my primary monitor and it still wouldn't show up. I don't think that is the problem. Thank you though.

Also, Afterburner doesn't show up in the icons tray. Should it show up there?

Okay. Afterburner does show up in the icons try by default but it can be disabled I think. I would honestly just reinstall Precision X, as you are familiar with it already anyway, they do the exact same things, remember to uninstall Afterburner though. Have you tried right clicking and running it as admin?

I did try to run it as an admin, but it still didn't work. I probably will just go back to Precision X but I would like to play Fallout without it being 1/3rds of my monitors refresh rate (at 144hz I'm capped at 48 fps, 120hz at 40 fps, 60hz at 20 fps) and not have to try to pick locks at 600 fps. I haven't found a way to limit fps with Precision X either. I really only want afterburner so I can do an fps cap.

Rivatuner (the thing used to lock fps) can be used with Precision, although your fps goes down with your refresh rate which suggests that Afterburner isn't limiting it, something else is. Did you make sure to install Rivatuner with Precision? I'm pretty sure it's there somewhere, although I can't check myself as it messes up my CSGO.

Fallout has a locked frame cap. Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the cap. It depends on the refresh rate of the monitor.

I tried to install Rivatuner without afterburner and it still won't run. Right now I have precision x installed. With Precision X though, it kinda has a frame limiter but the max that it can be set to is 120 fps. Ill probably have to use that or use none.

Fallout 4 just has Vsync enabled as far as I am aware, which will cap it AT your refresh rate, why you have a cap at a third of your refresh rate, I have no idea. I would personally disable vsync and limit the fps at 60 (above 60 increases the games speed)

Fallout 4 does have v-sync enabled that matches to 60hz only if it is the native refresh rate of the display. If it is higher, it will always do a refresh rate that is 1/3 of the set refresh rate. Since I have a 144hz monitor, v-sync is always set 1/3 of whatever the frame rate is.

I would like to get afterburner so I can do what you said. I want to disable v-sync so I can lock it to a normal refresh rate and not be stuck at 48 fps or 20 fps.

Ah okay, if it's any use to you, you can disable vsync for Fallout 4 in the Nvidia Control Panel, under Manage 3D settings, Program Settings.

Yea I did that. V-sync is off but now I render 700 fps while lockpicking and doing other things, making it kinda hard to play. Now I need to limit the frame rate, which requires afterburner...

Have you tried disabling anti virus and stuff temporarily to see if that is blocking it?

Sorry it took so long to reply. I kinda gave up for a while. I disabled norton, and it still wouldn't open.

Also, between now and last time I replied, I reformatted my computer so that didn't fix it.

That's very strange, a format should have fixed the issue at least. I honestly don't know what to suggest at this point :/
