So i have had my MSI b360m bazooka running for a year with a 8600k (no OC or undervolt) without any troubles. Recently ive aquired a Asus prime z370-p mainboard which had a 8700 non k sitting in it. I moved the 8700 to the MSI B360M, first noticing the higher temps (75c) using a aftermarket cooler. My 8600k didnt go over 61c.
So i undervolted the 8700 using throttlestop by -125mv on both cpu core and cache (adaptive offset). This brought down the temps to 64c at the most for the CPU, so closely matching the 8600k which was running without undervolt at 1.26v.

I am wondering now, is this going to be a good idea? The MSI B360M Bazooka's VRM's are they capable enough to handle the 8700? Ive got DDR running at 2666mhz and obviously there wont be any OC in the future.
Does undervolting the CPU also put less stress on the mainboards vrms? With the Asus prime Z370-P i could undervolt in the BIOS, and i suspect that board has better vrms but i could be wrong, heard bad things about that MB too. What about PLII/max power to the CPU regarding these mainboards?

What to do, change mainboard and use the Z370-prime? Or will things be fine with the B360M and the undervolt i got on it? Its much more work to change MB and reinstall windows.

Another thing, when i took out the 2x8gb mem modules and put them back in, the mb wouldnt recognize one of the modules no matter what i did. Not untill i put in single 4gb from another pc, removed that and could run the matched pair 2x8gb sticks again.

The B360M has the following BIOS settings: long duration power limit 115w, short duration power limit 125w.

They are pretty small VRMs. Board does list all the way up the 9900KS which is a power hungry chip as supported.

Hardware monitor 64 should be able to spit out some motherboard temperatures for you (VRMs are usually good to about 125C, obviously lower is better). If you are worried you can always use a downdraft CPU cooler or point a case fan right at the VRM area for extra safety margin.

When swapping memory it is sometimes necessary to do a CMOS reset to force a memory training. If it is working now then nothing to worry about.

Z class boards come with all the fun settings. Z370-P is itself not the most robust board they made. Looks to have a lot of parallelization in its VRMs, but still pretty basic ones. Again, should be fine for either chip.

Thankyou for chiming in. Do you think it matters if i use the 8700 in the B360m or the Z370p from asus? The Z370 has one defective PCI-E slot, but i could use the lower/2nd slot.
HWinfo64 doesnt show the VRM temps, not that i can find atleast. CPU core goes to 1.24v after a throttlestop undervolt, max 66c running BF2042 which is a very CPU hungry game.

Is it worth it swapping the mainboard to the Z370-p or will the B360M suffice? Thinking in special the VRM's and undervolting, am fine with throttlestop but of BIOS is better...

So a 20fps difference in BF1 going from 4x to 16x pcie-3.0 speeds? Damn. So you suggest id use the MSI b360m for the 8700 then?

Shouldn't be that bad. Take a close look at the chart. PCIe 4x 1.1 is at the bottom.

PCIe x4 3.0 direct from the CPU is much higher up on the chart, 4th place for below 4K.

Z370-P supports 16x, 8x/4x, and 4x modes. Which means that you should have PCIe 3.0 4x going to that second slot. Too bad they didn't wire it up for 8x, but still not that bad a decrease.

With those boards I wouldn't want to do overclocking, so putting the 8600k in the B360 board is fine if you want to use the Z370 for the 8700.

Gets to a point and you have to start looking at it closely. You have those CPUs in hand, but a cheap DDR4 LGA1700 motherboard and you can drop in a 12th gen CPU for not too much money. May even be able to sell those chips and boards and recoup a lot.

So cpu-wise it wont matter if i put the 8700 in the Z370 or in the B360m? In that case id rather not do the hassle and swap mainboards again. Both systems are going to be used for a while untill i build two modern ones :)

Thanks for your time

Edit: not too much related but, i was going from a 8600k to a 8700 non k on the same board and system. Temps where automatically 10 to 15 celcius higher using the same cooler and settings. I had to undervolt the cpu to mitigate that.
I know the 8700 has 6c12t and is actually clocked higher (4.6 turbo and 4.3 all-core), and HWinfo reported a 1.4volt vcore compared the 8600k's 1.24v. Its just that the 8700 is much more power hungry i guess?
