Question MSI B450 gaming pro carbon AC 4 pin connector

First time posting
I'm hoping to upgrade from current potato pc/build my first PC and was looking at the MSI b450 pro carbon ac. Now for the silly question: I've seen on some forums that you can just use just the 8 pin PCIe on the board and leave the 4 pin. Is this true and will this actually work? Or do you need to use both 8 pin and 4 pin?

The manual says both of them should be connected, I'd say there's a good chance it'd work with only the 8 pin. The extra 4 pin certainly isn't required from a power perspective.
