Question MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon Max Wifi and AMD 5700x3D won't boot

Hello,

I recently received a new CPU (AMD Ryzen 5700x3D) but I can't start my PC with it, it is stuck on the CPU red light on my motherboard. I litterally tried everything I found on Internet (reddit, MSI, AMD, etc.) but nothing worked for me.

Before this, I had an ADM Ryzen 3600 and everythings was working fine. If I put it back, this is ok.

There is my setup :​

  • Motherboard : B450 GAMING PRO CARBON MAX WIFI
  • CPU (old -> new) : AMD Ryzen 5 3600 -> AMD Ryzen 7 5700x3D
  • GPU : GeForce RTX™ 2060 GAMING Z 6G
  • RAM : Corsair VENGEANCELPX16GB (2 x 8 Go) DDR4 3600 (Pc4-28800) C181.35V
  • PSU : Seasonic Core GM - 650W (80 + Gold)
  • SSD 1 (OS) : Samsung 970 EVO Plus
  • SSD 2 (Data) : Samsung SSD 860

What I have already tried :​

MOBO side :

  • I flashed the bios to the version recommanded on the official MSI support site (7B85v2E). Then I tried the latest beta version (7B85v2G1). Same thing, still stuck with CPU red light.
  • I checked if CPU was really ok for my B450 mobo, and yes : https://fr.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-MAX-WIFI/support#cpu
  • I cleared the CMOS : first I use the jumper (shorting the two pins with a screwdriver), then I removed the battery (>15 min) and press power button to drain all remaining electricity).
CPU side :

  • There is no pin bent on the CPU. A tech store near from my house tested it on an other mobo and they confirm me that it's working. So it's not an issue about the CPU.
  • I bought an AMD Ryzen 5700x (not 3D) and everything works with it.
  • I tried to wait 5min while booting but still stuck on CPU red light.
Memory side :

  • I tried to boot with only one RAM : same issue. I tried the 4 slots.
  • I removed the 2 RAM : the red light goes to DRAM. So CPU seems POST. But as I said, the CPU is working on another mobo.
  • I checked the RAM compatibility and it seems OK (DDR4 3600). The tech in the store tried with another RAM and still won't boot.
PSU side :

  • I checked the PSU connected to the 8 CPU PWR pins : all seems fine. I don't think I need the last 4 for a 105W CPU.


So it seems to be an issue with the BIOS, as the 5700x works but the 3D does not (new 5000 series). On the MSI support page, the 5700x doesn't need the same recent update.

But my BIOS is up to date so I don't understand (I checked the version on BIOS and Windows 11).



Guys I'm really lost, I don't know what to do anymore but since this should work, I don't want to give up now.

I cleared the CMOS : first I use the jumper (shorting the two pins with a screwdriver), then I removed the battery (>15 min) and press power button to drain all remaining electricity).
Ideally you're advised to clear the CMOS by first disconnecting from the wall and display, then removing the CMOS battery, pressing and holding down the power button on the case for 30secs to drain any residual power, then replace the battery after 30mins.

I bought an AMD Ryzen 5700x (not 3D) and everything works with it.
You might want to drop the Ryzen 7 5700X3D onto another known working motherboard with the latest BIOS version, to rule out your new processor being Dead on Arrival(DoA).

I tried to boot with only one RAM : same issue. I tried the 4 slots.
When working with one stick, populate slot A2, when two sticks of ram, populate slots A2 and B2.

Then I tried the latest beta version (7B85v2G1)
Try and reflash the BIOS using this guide;

then clear the CMOS as stated above, then retry the 5700X3D.

I'll try to do that. But you really think the BIOS should be flashed this way (without CPU)? I flashed it via BIOS GUI with my old 3600 CPU. In my mobo user guide they offer both solutions...

- For the RAM : that what I do yes
- For the DoA : 5700X3D was tested on another mobo and it works

I was unable to flash without CPU, nothing happened when I used my USB key on this Flash port.
But I reflash with GUI and did the clear CMOS exactly as you said, but still won't boot... Stuck at CPU red light on mobo.

removed the new cpu and install the old cpu and boot into windows or bios and flash that way.. if not then you will need to remove your cpu,ram, and graphics card, and hard drives. and try the "bios flashback option" like you tried.. but make sure that you have a usd drive that is under 32GB, and formatted to "fat32" and that the rom you downloaded is "renamed" to "msi.rom" .
then plug usb stick into usb port (the 1 for flashing). and then turn on the psu , and press the bios button for 3-5 seconds and you will see the bios led start flashing.. if it flashes 2-4 times and then stops and nothing after that it does not like the usb drive or you did not format properly or remane it correctly. .. if it slow flashes for about 10 times or more and then speeds up, you should be ok.. just go make a drink and come back after 10 minutes and you should be set. just install new cpu. and test it,, remeber it will take the computer maybe a few restarts before it fully boots.... .this is 100% normal as its checking the new bios.. and the cpus info to see if its compatable.. if can take a few restarts so be patient. .. if not take the motherboard and cpu to a local store and ask 1 of the technicians to try for you..

That's exactly what happened to me, flash 2-4 times and nothing after. But I can install my old CPU so I flashed it that way, and it worked.
I already tried to boot it many times after bios flash and clear cmos but still stuck on red light...
I already took my motherboard and cpu to a store and they told me that they don't understand why it's not booting. They take me 1 week and 100€ to make a diag so... I prefer to find by myself

from personal experiance msi boards are a pain in the rear end when it comes to memory. as is ryzen.

what cpu cooler are you using.

Yes XMP is off and RAM stick in slot 2.
I used a Prism Wraith with the 3600 and now the Peerless Assassin 120 SE for the 5700X3D.
But it should be working even without cooler, not be stucked at CPU red light...

when you do a bios flash , you should not clear the cmos.. ,, not until at last you have 1 sucessful boot into windows..
i suggest you do the following..

1)clear cmos
2)pull battery out for 30 minutes
3)reflash the bios. (try latest bios if not,try and older bios,.. that will still support your cpu). (as you might have temp corruped bios).
4) make sure the bios is on usb stick under 32gb and flashed to "fat32" (this is needed). and the file is called "gigabyte.bin"(turn on "file name extention" when renaming file."(important to check its got correct ".bin" and not "gigabyte.bin.F**"(F** being bios firmware number).

5)after the flash,, let the the pc try and reboot several times (DO NOT CLEAR CMOS).. you may have to let the computer do its stuff for about 5-10 minutes, (normally its faster, but its been know to take 40 minutes, with some "beta bios flashes".

most computer places will do a free bios flash for you,,

also try a few usb sticks incase the motherboard does not like the usb stick your using...

I tried to clear CMOS like this then flash with the version 7B85v2F. This is pretty quick, after the flash my computer boot in 5 minutes. Everything seems fine, my OS tell me that I am in 7B85v2F, my BIOS too.
But still stuck at the same point...

you update and the chipset drivers ?
from the link I gave you, (msi has a different number and is modified, you don't need to install from there, only from AMD)
All of these with old cpu , after you put 5700x3d
First boot always is very slow

The processor must work, your motherboard is at fault or you are not doing something right (slowly and carefully it wants)
Enter the bios with the 3600 before starting anything and do factory settings (load deffaults), nothing else, then go ahead and do not do CMOS

I don't have other USB stick, but I can have a look tomorrow at my office. But if it was the USB stick to blame, I shouldn't be able to update my BIOS no ? My OS (W11) tell me that I am in 7B85v2F, my MSI BIOS display the same thing.

Ok I will try to load defaults, keep you up to date.
