two external displays using USB-C to HDMI on MSI GL63 laptop w Sabrent USB-C hub w HDMI port

I am trying to output to two displays on my MSI GL63 laptop. I have an HDMI out and a USB Type-C port. I have my display connected to the HDMI port. I purchased a USB Type-C hub with an HDMI port on it, but when I plugged the hub in it didn't work for my display or for any USB devices. I smelled fried electronics and disconnected the hub. The connector was extremely hot. The laptop and peripherals seem to be fine, but I'd like to understand what went wrong.

Can I hotplug USB-C port? I did. I assumed this was fine since I hotplug USB devices and HDMI devices all the time.

Does my USB-C port not support display? Admittedly, I don't understand whether USB-C and USB 3.1 are the same and whether they always support display.

The MSI manual says the port supports USB3.x and DisplayPort. A search seemed to indicate that my laptop and GPU (GFX 1660) could use two external displays using the HDMI and USB-C port.

Did I connect an incompatible device, or was my Sabrent hub just defective?

Much appreciation for your assistance

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Does the hub smell burnt or is it the USB port on the laptop that smelt burnt? We can deduce that you're on a Sabrent USB hub but we'd be best served with a model to said hub or a link. You will also need to provide an SKU to your MSI laptop since the GL63 that shows up via Google has the RTX2060 equipped on it(and will likely have different ports when compared to your unit).

Please include the make and models of the monitors as well.

Thanks for your response. I'm sorry for not providing full details. Devices are below.

The burning came from the port on the laptop. Afterwards, I also (perhaps foolishly) tried the hub in my other laptop and it worked fine for both USB devices and HDMI display, so it seems the problem was with the USB-C port on the MSI laptop--though I am still curious as to whether it was defective or whether it is incompatible with the Sabrent hub/adapter.

Laptop: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GL65-9SX-GTX/Specification

(Type C 5-Port w HDMI)

Display 1 (HDMI port): https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/flat/24-sr24r-flat-monitor-ls24r350fhnxza/

Display 2 (Sabrent USB-C to HDMI adapter/hub):
Wacom Cintiq 16: https://wacomstore.ca/product/wacom-cintiq-16/
(forums have had other users say they've used a USB-C/HDMI adapter successfully with the Cintiq)

(the other laptop was an HP Omen https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c05561170 --the successful display output was to a different monitor)

Thanks again. Much appreciated
