I'm looking to upgrade my current setup with a msi gtx 1060 gaming x 6gb that requries an 8pin connector and a 400w power supply. I have a 400w PSU, my only problem is that I only have a 6pin connector. So I was wondering if these 6pin to 8pin connectors work and if they are safe to use.

My current PC specs:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
RAM: 8gb DDR3
System: Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit
Graphics card: ASUS Radeon R7 240 oc 4gb
PSU: a old pre built 400w

Why don't you just get a regular GTX1060? Most GTX1060s only require 1 6 pin cable.

And if you have the standard 400w PSU that comes in most Z200 HP computers then that's a decent PSU. Go open your computer and look at the PSU and see what the label say.

If it's a Delta Electronics PSU with 400watts output on the 12v rail (or says 33amps on 12v rail), then it should be easily able to power a GTX1060. The GTX1060 G1 only uses like 15-20 watts more than a regular GTX1060 (which uses like 120-130 watts), and doesn't really need a 8 pin connector.

A 80w i7 3770 CPU + 130w GPU + 30w mobo + 20w for HDD/DVD/etc = 260 watts max. Assuming all of those are pulled from the 12v rail, you're looking at 260 watts on the 12v rail when your PSU can...

I have a z220 cmt workstation. I was looking to buy a gtx 1060 windforce oc 6gb that only needs a 400w with 6pin connector. But im afraid that its performance wouldnt be as good as the msi one
