Hi,
So I bought and installed 3 weeks ago the above GPU and although I am very pleased with the increase in benching and games (I had a GTX 1060 6gb) I am I have to say quite disappointed at how poor in my opinion it OC's? I did initially have the core voltage at 85, the core clock at 100 and the mem clock at 500 and at 1920x1080 in Heaven was getting approx 3195 to 31200 I was very pleased with as in comparison to the score of 1863 on the 1060 thats clearly a HUGE boost!!
However, after a while at these settings, the fps in Heaven began to dip to like 5fps and the stuttering began?! and although it completes the bench marking, with a score still in or around 3160 I can't for the life of me fathom what is going on? I am to a degree thinking that it may be throttling as my case is small (Corsair 100R) and my motherboard an Asus Z-170K only jas 3 fan headers and that includes the CPU!? But the card temps in Afterburner never go above 74 degree's?!
Have I seemingly lost in the silicon lottery stakes?! As I've seen reviews obviously of this card and the people are applying MUCH higher OC's than I am and are as a result, getting much better scores!! I don't think that the card is defective as if I wind back the core voltage to 85, leave the core clock at 100 and wind back the mem clock to 430 I am getting an average fps of around 36.3 and a max fps of 263 or so with a score of around 3168 to 3170 again at 1080p.
The reason my thoughts turn to throttling and believe me I am NO expert is, when my system first boots, if I run Heaven immediately I always get a good score, if I run the benchmark a few times on the trot, the lower the overall score goes?!
As I say here in the UK we have had some of the hottest weather recently and as such the ambient temps are still not as cool as normal, but what could in your opinions be causing this?! I have ordered a better intake and exhaust fan combo to see if that will make a difference, not necessarily to the overall score, moreover to the score lowering the more I run Heaven (which for me at least is the most annoying thing!) My EVGA GTX 1060 although TINY in comparison, was MUCH more stable and OC'd VERY well in Heaven!!!
Have I got a case thats too small? Is the backplate on the GPU causing too much heat to accumulate in too small a space? I am almost out of idea's in regard to what could be causing this, other than temps, but then again as I have mentioned, the temp on the card never goes above 74/4 degrees?!
ANY help or advice as long as not too complex lol, would be most appreciated!! I mean does anyone else have this card? And if so, what OC results are you getting!?
My full specs are:-
Corsair 100R case
ASUS Z-170K Mobo
i5 6600K OC to 4.4ghz Artic i11 Cooler
16GB Corsair LP (Stock clocks)
MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X Plus GPU
EVGA 850 P2 Platinum
I don't think the card needs to be RMA'd I have seenslight artefacts in Heaven but I feel that its simply a poor card for OC'ing but I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on what, if anything is causing this or am I just being paranoid!?
Many thanks!!!
