Hi guys

I have posted a previous question regarding the gigabyte h61 chipset motherboard and its compatability with the i5-3470 CPU and the bios issues involved as the product description states that is is compatible with only second generation cpu's

I have done some shopping and Found a MSI h61 - P20 G3 and the write up says that it supports 3rd generation cpus and ivy bridge processors only.

I thought that the h61 chipset only supported the 2nd generation i-processors.

thanks guys in advance for clearing this up for me

Solution
MSI board support Ivy Bridge with BIOS update, u will need BIOS ver. 7788v16 or newer..

If u are building from new, make sure u can update the BIOS...
(not familiar with MSI board, either it can update without any processor or it need compatible processor first)

Thank you for your response.

I am really trying to straighten things out before i get a board that doesnt work and i am stuck with hardware that cant be used.

with that being said it was suggested the bios update could only take place with a second generation cpu. Also does the description of the MSI p20 board indicate that i will be able to use my i5-3470, in a sort of plug and play fashion with out needing to update the BIOs.

Newer rev. or newer produced board usually already come with latest BIOS. so cannot tells much without seeing the board...

In my case, I bought my parts from shop that also provide computer service/fix..
so they can update it for me (or let me borrow their old proc).. kinda after sales service...

Oh ok thank you. Is there a way to find out the version of the motherboards bios before buying it.

it printed on the motherboard.. rev. 1.0 / 1.1 / or else (bigger is newer revision)

sadly this is not a guarantied ways knowing the bios it has..

u may better start by downloading the online mobo manual, try look at the updating bios part/section..
some mobo can be updated via usb without any processor on it, some offer other solution...
and some required proc.. (do not offer the feature)

thank you guys for your support.

I would like to ask another question while we are at it. Which board would be better the gigabyte h61 mobo
and the MSI H61M-p20 G3 S1 motherboards
