I recently upgraded my mobo from a Gigabyte b85m-hd3 to an MSI H97 PC Mate, mainly because I got a new case and wanted a little easier to work with full atx board.
I have been having some issues with it, and I'm not sure if it's something I should RMA or if there are other things I can try.
First, I have had some issues with SATA: the board has 6 sata ports, of which I am using 5 (2 small ssds for operating systems, 2 1TB WD drives and 1 DVD drive). When I first booted after switching, I thought that one of my hdds was failing, because it was not showing up in bios/POST, and only intermittently showing up in Windows/OS X/Ubuntu. However, I tried swapping out the sata cable (no difference) and swapping sata ports (at which point the OTHER hdd would have the issues, not the first), and finally using the 6th sata port instwad of the one causing issues (no difference). Basically, no matter the configuration, 1 of my 2 hard drives will not show up in bios, and will only sometimes show up once booted into an OS after some time. I have never had a problem like this before, which makes me think there may be a problem with the mobo, but I do not know how to confirm that.
My other issue is with booting windows. After some time using the new setup, Windows failed to boot. I normally use a UEFI bootloader called Clover to triple boot OS X and Linux, and it sometimes has problems when Windows does auto updates, so this was not too surprising. However, I can now not get it to boot into Windows at all, OR boot a recovery or Windows install USB. I have tested the USB on another machine using an MSI and UEFI, and it boots into the install just fine. On my machine, the installer will either hang on the spinning circle/windows logo, or hang on a black screen, but I am able to boot into both OS X and Ubuntu successfully on my machine.
What I am wondering is, does this sound like a hardware issue and should I RMA the board, or are there other things you recommend I try first?
I am open to any and all advice/suggestions on this. I have never swapped a motherboard without re-building a system with all new hardware before, and I didn't do any sort of re-installation this time since the board was very similar to my old mobo. Also, the firmware listed in the bios seems to be the most recent version listed on MSI's website.
I would appreciate any help with this issue, please ask if there is some other information I can provide.
Thank you
