I've just addd a second 290 to my setup but I just can't seem to get the temps under control.

They idle between 45-50C but as soon as I run any in-game benchmark, specifically the Batman Arkham City benchmark, the top card shoots up to 94C.

I've been trying to get in under control all weekend and now the temps don't climb as fast but they still get to 94 on the top card.

So far, I've:

Raised the tower off the floor and onto my desk
Reseated the two cards
Swapped the two cards around
Removed the front fan filter from my R4 case
Removed the filter from the top rear exhaust
Removed both side panels and left the case door open and run the benchmark
Set up a custom fan profile to allow the fans to hit 100% sooner

All those thing slow down the climb but the top card still hits 94C with the bottom card following closely behind

Is there anything I can do to keep the temps in check??

Cards are MSI R9 290 Gaming 4G

Solution
AMD has not published a max temp for the R9 series, but after a 40 minute search I came up with 94-95C, but maybe a bit higher. Here's a short link on Tom's with a little info'
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2094399/max-safe-temp-290.html
Also a review at MaximumPC with some mention of temperatures;
http://www.maximumpc.com/amd_radeon_r9_290_benchmarks
Also, someplace besides the MaxPC article I read that about the only solution is/are after-market cooling systems.

Does your R4 have a mount for a side 120mm or 140mm fan? That might help.

Lastly, tomorrow is Monday. It is sometimes difficult to get through to a real person at AMD, but it might be worth a phone call to talk to their tech support about this. They have helped me...

UPDATE: Sorry, didn't realize your cards had the twin fan MSI cooler. This changes my reply a bit: Call or chat with MSI tomorrow and see what they have to say. There may be something wrong with the cooling system(s). Their "Twin Frozr" coolers are one of the best and usually do a good job at cooling. (Side panel intake fan is still a good idea, though, and relatively inexpensive).

Thanks for your reply. The side panel is windowed so I can't mount a fan on there
I'll give them a call and see what they say
