Hello everyone. My new r9 390x just arrived today and I am very excited. However, I am running into a problem. The temperatures are way too high. In the witcher 3 for example, (at stock settings and clocks) temperatures are reaching up to 90 degrees. No graphics card I've had has ever gone that high. Just came from testing a sapphire r9 390 nitro. Temps on that card got to about 83 in the Witcher 3.

I even set a custom fan profile and fans were at 100 percent when it reached 90.

I'm playing at 1440p at high settings.

I know these temps are not normal, so what can I do to fix them? Reapply thermal paste? Return it?

Solution

The first thing you can try is reapplying the thermal paste. However some manufacturer makes the warranty...
These temps are normal for AMD cards. Actually these are still low in comparisson to the 200 series. 😀

Edit: Although the MSI model should run a few c cooler than this. At least a bit under 90. Maybe it's quite hot where you live or airflow in your case is not optimal for the card?

Anyway these temps arent bad for the chipset. The tock cooler model reaches the same temps or even more.

The first thing you can try is reapplying the thermal paste. However some manufacturer makes the warranty void when you unscrew the screws on the GPU. Check the GPU if there is a sticker that says, if this is torn the warranty is void. If there are no stickers you can reapply with a good thermal paste.

If not you can contact them and see if you can return it.

As you can tell here it should not be going that high, especially with fans on max.

Solution
Thanks for the responses everyone. I believe strongly there is a problem with the card so I ordered a replacement. Luckily I have 30 days to return the card, so I get to keep this one, while I wait for the new one, which should be here on Monday. Hopefully it works perfectly.

Yeah its better to have it replaced. I am using GIGabyte R9 390X and on Witcher 3 Max temperature was at 83. Even in most of the latest titles like phantom pain on very high settings Temperature was falling between 75 to 83 degrees. PLease share your results once you get your new card. thanks.

Hey man. Just got a new card about a week ago. Temps stay below 72 degrees in all games with this one. So I'm definitely convinced it was some sort of thermal paste error on the old one. Luckily this one is working fine. I'm not sure what was wrong with the other cards. Same case, same airflow, same everything. Doesn't make sense other then the first one was defective.

Alright that's great news then. :) Below 72 degrees is awesome.

Well I'm assuming all you guys are running at 1080p which is why you got 73c My 390x does that but if I crank it up to 4k in fallout 4. it reaches 90c but I'm not worried co's had it a year and it hasn't died yet. sure it's normal. but 1080p reaching 90c maybe not. So glad you got it down to 73c..... Can anyone tell me if mine reaching that in 4k is OK or not. seems fine
