Hi gang,
Amidst the many threads I see with 4080s not giving a display signal, I can't even get any lights on with mine. I recently purchased an MSI Ventus 3X OC RTX 4080 to treat myself after getting a new job. I am upgrading from a 3070ti. I made sure that the 4080 would be compatible with my setup, as I have a pre-built from a couple of years ago. I plugged everything into pcpartpicker before making the purchase. Everything looked compatible. The biggest concern I had was the size of the case and if the GPU would fit. Little did I know that when it would arrive I would be met with my naivety not accounting for the need of 3 PCIE 8 pin or 3 PCIE 6 + 2 cables. The card did come with an adaptor, so I made use of that after scrounging around town locally for a 3rd PCIE 6 + 2 pin cable while another was on its way from Amazon.

After plugging everything in, I get nothing. No lights, no fans, no life from the GPU. Everything else works just fine, except my CPU and RAM I feel are trying to tell me something is wrong. Upon boot, they light up the standard RGB way but then just turn solid red which is unusual.

After looking over some threads and reddit, I tried re-connecting the cables, wiggling the adaptor, and also tried the firmware update put out by GPU. All I get from the firmware update is that no compatible hardware is detected.

My last effort includes picking up a new 12pin adaptor from Best Buy tomorrow, and maybe also switching some of the PCIE cables around.

Any advice or thoughts? This has me very bummed out. Photos are attached here as well of my PC on but with no GPU power.

I'd have to dip my head back into the pc but I believe this is it based on the color and the make I remember: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qb...ly-modular-atx-power-supply-dp-gd-dq750-m-v2l

I purchased the pre-built back on 08/29/2021. Not even 3 years old.
That PSU came with the needed cables.

FYI: Modular cables are NOT interchangeable between brands or even sometimes between different models of the same brand PSU. Use only cables that come with or are designed specifically for your PSU. Mixing cables can fry components.

All of the cables I have are currently used. There are two PCIE cables going into the CPU, as far as I can see, with one slot left being open for an 8pin cable, which was why I bought another.

I didn't want to risk unplugging one of the CPU cables.

I also only find corsair brand cables on amazon.

The PSU that you linked states it has two(2) CPU EPS 8-pins and four(4) PCI-E 8-pins. So you should have (4) available PCI-E plugs available.

I'll also say that PSU is probably underpowered for that GPU.

That's correct, there are 4 available plugs. But I wasn't given enough cables. I did note 850w being the recommended power but I felt confident after reading people having no issues with 750w models and pcpartpicker suggesting I'd have enough output.

Well, if you used cables not designed for that PSU you could have fried that 4080. I'd remove that PSU and ALL the power cables and replace it with a better brand 850+watt unit.

Definitely a better unit.
I am pleased to report that after purchasing the power supply and replacing all of the cables, in addition to adding the 3rd PCIE cable that I had already ordered separately, the 4080 is performing without issue so far.

One thing I did wonder while swapping everything out was if I had accidentally used the daisy petals with the previous power supply. No use attempting to check now. At least the power supply will last longer into the future hopefully despite only being a year newer.
