Hi,

Unfortunately I'm having some issues with my MSI RX480 4GB Gaming X.

As supposed to the fan doesn't spin under 60C, it starts spinning when gaming.
However the fan speed keeps increasing up to 90% or even 100% of the fan speed.
Even then the GPU temp is 75C (open case) or 81+C (closed case).
I don't feel a lot of hot air from the GPU vents at the back of the PC.

When I stop the game the temperature drops. The fan keeps spinning for a while longer ( for example GPU temp 36C fan speed 55%).

This doesn't seem like normal behaviour does it?

What I already tried:
- This is a very new windows 10 installation:
- Tried the most recent drivers with and without Radeon setting.
- Removed drivers with DDU and reinstalled.
- Updates motherboard BIOS.
- Tried with and without afterburner.
- High fan speeds CPU and case fans
- Repositioned my CPU fan

I'm thinking the card doest cool as is should due to high temps and wht I think is a low airflow out the case...

Ideas I can try are welcome.

Kind regards
Y

The card will get hot when gaming, that is normal.
Everything you described is normal GPU behavior. Max temp for your card before it starts throttling is 93C.

What is the GPU load of your card in relation to the temperature and fan speed? If it's running at 100% load those temps would actually be quite good.
Use a program like MSI afterburner to bring those numbers back here, get the idle temps/load and temp/load while gaming.
To reduce load you can turn V-sync on or limit FPS to a lower amount (60, for example). If you don't limit FPS your card will generate as many frames as possible which in most cases is just unnecessary.

Hi Dotas1, Goat,

All reviews I have read achieve 73C at100% load and low/acceptable fan speed (like 30%). This isn't an reference card but one with aftermarked TwinFrozer cooler.
Yet I have 80C+ at 100% load and +- 100% fan speed.

I don't have a problem with the 80C (although the 73 is preferred) but the 100% fan speed is loud(!!) and achieved after few minutes. I don't know what happens when I play for an hour but

Also, the first month the card stopped cooling immediately after gaming. Now it continues to cool even when the temperatures are below 40C.

It also seems your case has inadequate airflow. There should not be that much of a change between closed case and open case. Definitely work on your airflow if possible.

Have you overclocked your card at all? I truly doubt the card is supposed to run at 73C 100% load with just 30% fan speed. Where exactly did you see that? I'd be surprised if that was true.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Airflow can be improved but isn't that bad I think. The first month the airflow was good enough because I didn't have this problem.

First is a Dutch hardware/tech site, second another Dutch site and last, Guru3d.

Check 'Geluidsdruk Load' is only 34 dB. At 100% it's a lot more.

Tried overclock using MSI gaming app and afterburner. Not much improvement so it runs at default speed of the card (1303 Mhz)

Ah Tomshardware hase +- 1950RMP which is 60% fan speed.
