The price is based on the components inside the machine... You'll find it hard to believe but the more performant the components the more expensive the machine will cost at the end... I know, it's shocking 😀

With a desktop GTX 980, the display should be a minimum of 1440p especially at that price.

1080p at 17 inches is fairly crisp due to higher ppi than most 1080p desktop monitors come in which usually is 23-27 inches. And considering the amount of money you invest in one of these machines, a GTX 980 for 1080p gaming would let you game for 2 or maybe even 3 years. Handicapping this machine with a 1440p or higher display would only net you maybe a year of ultra max settings gaming then you'd have to heartbreakingly lower some graphical settings after that. I say the overall config is just fine.

My MSI had the GTX 680 and was good for about one hour unplugged gaming.
It would draw over 6amps while running Bioshock Inifity,,,

Not if you buy used! But then if it's too old, a new thin laptop can approach the GPU capabilities and surpass the CPU capabilities of your beast.

I just ordered an Alienware with 980M, 4k display, and the 6820HK mentioned in this article. Should I cancel and hold out for one of these newer models with desktop 980?

Note that in the article it says that the MSI laptop with the desktop 980 GPU will have a 230W or 240W AC adapter. That isn't good enough. It needs 240W for the mobile 980m and moderately powerful Haswell/Broadwell/Skylake chips up to extreme unlocked CPUs. 180W causes throttling (which MSI and Alienware have learned the hard way).

These laptops with the desktop 980 GPU will need a ~330w AC adapter or whatever the next size up is from 240w. I wonder how much heavier they may be from more heatsinking and if they'll all switch over to 12V fans rather than 5 volts, like MSI has been doing for a few years now.

I'd cancel. Maybe even if the laptops with the desktop 980 GPU aren't too your liking, the model you are interested in already will be less expensive.
