This is now my second Mobo from MSI that has ended up being RMA'ed
I have had a lot of memory based problems since I put my new gaming system together: (full specs incoming)
Mobo: MSI X99S and A
Cpu: i5820k 3.30ghz
Cooler: h100i GTX
GPU: MSI 980 ti 6G
RAM: 4x4gb ddr4 Corsair LPX vengeance 3200 MHz
SSD: 240gb Kingston HyperX predator PCi-e M.2
PSU: Corsair ax860
-------------------------------------
Problems first began when I tried to switch XMP on in the BIOS, At first the pc would boot up fine, but according to CPU-Z and the hardware list in BIOS, my 16gb of RAM would show up as 12,5 gb and running in triple channel.
I put the RAM in DIMMslot 1-3-5-7 as mentioned in the Mobo manual.
At first I thought it was bad RAM but after testing every module in all the DIMM slots, no error was found - only when I ran all 4 in quad channel would i get 300k errors in 10 minutes.
After googling the issue, I was recommended that I boosted the Clk strap to 125 MHz, which seemed to fix all the instability problems. I ran aida64 stress test for 2 hours straight, without any problems. So figuring I solved the problem I recieved a memory management BSOD after playing Fall-Out 4 maybe an hour or so. I then proceeded to BIOS where changed the XMP setting to "AUTO" instead of the capping it at 2666 MHz - After F10'ing the computer restarted but soon after the restart it shut down and turned back on after 3 secs. Since then the pc wont even post, There's no screen or any keyboard/mouse contact. And I recieve the following LED debug code on the card: " 04-60-55-04 " Which keeps switching in that order.
04 is something about "Power on south bridge Initialization"
And I can't figure out the rest.
I have thoroughly tried any method that should make it boot back up again, but nothing will work.
I have since RMA'ed the second board, and they too have no idea what's going on.
Recently I ran past my MOBO on MSI's website, and found their QVL list. And it turns out my RAM is not on their compatibility list. I find it strange because basically any other model of these RAM is on that list - but the 4x4 is simply not there ?
So my question to you is, could this be the simple answer as to why my motherboard keeps bricking ?
Or could it be a bad memory controller on my CPU ? And if so, how do I find out ?
Please help, I'm pissed that I just can't game on my sweet new system...
thank you!
Also the BIOS is fully updated to the newest version, according to their support page on the website about the MOBO.
