I've just built a new machine based on an MSI X99A Sli Plus board. Other components:

  • i7 5820K Processor
    GeForce GTX 1070 Graphics Card
    4x4GB HyperX Fury RAM
Samsung SM950 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD
    750w Corsair PSU
    NZXT Kraken x61 Cooling
The machine is running fine and temps look good under load etc. I haven't done any overclocking yet.

The only issue is it seems to take a long time to boot. From power on its a good 20+ seconds before I get the BIOS screen. After that, Windows seems to load reasonably fast. See video here:

Note: I have updated the BIOS to latest version and I have Fast Boot enabled (although I'm not really sure what this does).

I'm not a very experienced builder (this is only my 3rd machine) and I was hoping someone could tell me if this is "normal" or if I should investigate further. I'm a little surprised that such a reasonably high end build would take this long to boot.

Many Thanks

Thanks for your reply. That's an interesting thought, I hadn't even thought about the PSU slowing the boot. I'm using a Corsair RM750i PSU. Haven't found anyone else complaining about slow boots with this PSU though...

well it is a guess because what ever is going on is before the os so its the bios/hardware issue somewhere

OK, having done some more research it appears that 20+ seconds to POST is not all that unusual for X99 boards. This article benchmarks the POST times for a number of X99 boards and they all seem to hit similar times. http://www.anandtech.com/show/8557/x99-motherboard-roundup-asus-x99-deluxe-gigabyte-x99-ud7-ud5-asrock-x99-ws-msi-x99s-sli-plus-intel-haswell-e/12?_ga=1.243887489.582925270.1474916482

The article explains that X99 does a lot of RAM testing (speeds etc) on startup leading to longer POST times. I guess I'll just have to live with it.. not really a problem as I don't spend my day powering up and down my machine.
