Question MSI Z490 Gaming Plus won’t boot with ram in channel “A”. Needing help!

Hey all,

I built my first PC last night and to my surprise, everything seemed to work! Everything lit up and the fans were spinning and I was so excited as I thought I did it on the first attempt! But…

My PC won’t boot with my new ram in channel “A”. I originally bought 32gb (3600hz) of G.skill trident Z ram, but the PC wouldn’t post at all no matter what slot I put the ram in. My old crappy ram from my old prebuilt PC started up and posted to bios in the b2 slot. So, I ended up returning the ram to newegg and picking up some new Vengeance LPX ram (32gb/3600hz) at Bestbuy thinking it was just bad ram. Then I got home and the PC still wouldn’t post. I then read that I should boost the ram speed to 3600hz and try again, so I put my old stick in, put the ram to 3600hz, put my new ram into the b2 slot, and boom! It posted to the bios!

Now, here’s the main issue. The “a” channel just won’t work. When I put my ram in the “a” channel, my MSI ez debug light blinks white from “dram” and “cpu”. In both a1 and a2 channels. The ram DOES work in both b1 and b2 channels. I tried each channel separately, and in combination with both sticks, and only channel “b” works. I can put both sticks beside each other in the “b” channel but I want to dual channel as I have two sticks.

Is this a bad motherboard issue? Is it a user error issue? Is there anyway I can fix this or try to fix it myself or do I need to take my whole PC apart and return my mobo to Amazon? Im really hoping there is a fix because I don’t want to wait another like week and take the PC apart.

Any help is appreciated.

Might want to consider updating your BIOS...
since to me it looks like the version you're on is not listed on their support site, meaning it was likely pulled for being defective/faulty.

Hello, I actually updated the BIOS. Well, tried too. I watched a video and the video from the MSI website. Plugged in the thumb drive with the file, did the correct steps, BIOS was updating, then at the end when it reached 100% the PC said it would reboot, PC turned off and did not turn back on (restart), so I just powered it off after doing some research and now the PC won’t post at all with a solid white light on the cpu portion of the ez debug.

Do you have any solutions or just return the motherboard? I considered reseating the CPU but it was literally working before the BIOS update…

Did you clear the CMOS after the no POST situation? Try with one stick of ram on either of the 4 slots on the motherboard.
Hi, yea I did try to reset the CMOS and I’ve tried my ram in each slot with no luck, just a steady solid white led on the EZ debug. The PC was posting before, just not working on channel “a” on the motherboard. I think I’m just going to try and get a replacement motherboard as much as it annoys me!

I have a similar setup. Turns out DDR4 is quite finicky. Check your motherboard compatibility with ram. I tried all of the above and couldn't post either. Buying compatible ram model listed for the mobo sorted it.
