I built my system yesterday:
i7 4770k
msi z87 gd65
2x8gb mushkin redline (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226382)
corsair force ssd 128 gb
amd 6970 gpu

the ssd and gpu are from my old system and i know are working fine.

i've tried formatting 6 times in 24 hours with the following results.

i go to install vista as my copy of 7 is an upgrade copy and i have to have vista through sp1 installed before i can install 7. After completing install of vista the system is unstable. it will boot to desktop and i wont be able to get to control panel, the window will pop open and close real quick, sometimes it will boot, get past the vista splash screen and then go to a black screen with a white mouse cursor and just stay there. sometimes it will get to the end of the install process where it says "preparing your desktop" and just sit there for ever. I feel like i may have incompatible ram for this mother board. i tried looking at the qvl on msi's site however its a dead link. i called msi to get recommendations for ram prior to ordering and the tech rep told me "if we support the brand at all we support all of their modules for that board" and he confirmed they support mushkin. however i still think he is wrong. something is up.

i am trying to find known compatible good ram for this board. can anyone help?? I want to hit 16gb and dont want to spend $500. also, i have tried this ram with default speed of 1600, and also turned on the xmp profile in bios which bumped it up to 1866. what speed should it be running?? I am not oc'd.

any help is greatly apprecaited.

Solution
No problem, glad all is workingtaking it straight through 7 vs the non supported Vista seemed to be the ticket, hope the PMs helped - C U Around

Well if ya only put one in, I'd go 2-3 passes..... Id suggest putting both in first and running it overnight or until it fails. I only bother with one at a time, if I get a failure.... to determine which one it is and rule out a socket problem.

Sounds good. Its almost through 2nd pass. After 4 I will power off. Put both in and start over. Will let it go till tomorrow am and post results. Will you guys check this thread tomorrow?

To be honest, i was kinda hoping to see some errors, at least then i had an idea of what the problem is. I have left it running while at work so it will get about 22 hours of total time running. assuming there are no errors when i get home i guess i can eliminate the ram as being bad. question though. i know you said you used these exact modules in z77 builds, i dont know the difference between z77 and my z87 board but have you used this ram in this exact board? im still concerned that it may not be jiving with the board.

ok, so for the record, you have used the exact ram modules in the exact mobo? Sorry to be neurotic about this.

So if i go back home and my ram has no errors. what should i try now? installing windows again on ssd? or install on one of my raptors?

i could try moving them to different sata ports also.

called msi to see what they said, they think ram is fine also all though they have not tested that frequency in their labs. gonna load up raptor drive and try to load windows up. if that works ill update firmware on sata then try and load windows on sata. if that doesnt work my ssd is under warranty and can be swaped out. if the raptor doesnt work ill call msi back tomorrow and see what they say.

I have used Mushkin DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866 in MSI builds using the G45 and GD-65 . If you're asking which one went in where I'd have to guess.... pretty sure the most recent was GD-65 w/ the 1866 cause the two were running same price last 2 months or so. We use a lot more Mushkins than all other brands put together.

yes, even w/o your troubles, Id install on the HD anyway. I put an OS install on its own partiton on the HD on every SSD + HD build as a backup.

so i got home after work. memtest went 21 hours 15 passes, no errors.

removed ssd, powered my first raptor. switched sata mode in bios to ide mode. boot to windows install disc. after it gets to the part saying "windows is loading files" it just goes to a black screen. tried with my 2nd raptor. same thing. tried with 2nd sata chord on different sata port. same thing.

switched bios mode to ahci mode.

tried again, with first raptor.
it actually gets to windows installer, lets me enter key. gets to the part where you select your drive/partition and the window is empty, it doesnt see my hd.

tried again with 2nd drive. same thing.

im sure its a setting in the bios to mess with. tomorrow is my first day off in 6 days. will have time to mess with it then and report back. please dont give up hope on me. still need your help fellas. will call msi in morning if i cant figure out setting to get raptor to register. then install windows and report back.

also i should say that the bios saw each raptor everytime regardless of sata mode setting.

talk to ya tomorrow!

At this point, if ya have done everything on the list below, I'd definitely get MSI on the phone again. Be much faster to have someone on the phone with you walking you thru the BIOS and other troubleshooting steps. I have only had to call them once but found the process quick and the support tech quite knowledgeable. I'd expect that they wouldn't want to spend the time w/o ya having performed memtest (most logical cause) but with that outta the way, the number of alternatives is varied.

-Have you wiped the install DVD down with 99% isoprophly alcohol and a proper cleaning wipe thingie ?
-Have you used a toolkit to clean optical laser ?

A USB install can eliminate the above concerns.

-Checked BIOS to make sure it did in fact upgrade

-Removed GFX card and tried install w/ on board GFX ?

-Using lowest numbered Intel (Not ASMedia) SATA port ?

so. i got it installed on raptor. no real problems. at first vista didnt see either raptor. i had to fo shift f11 during install to get to dos and manually format the drives/partitions. then the drive was visible. got it all installed. the mother board doesnt support vista though so i cant get lan driver working. corsair is shipping me a new ssd shortly and i just got a new copy of windows 7 that is not an upgrade. hoping new hard drive fixes all isseus wil report back once i know more. hopefully early next week. will you guys still be watching this thread?

btw, i realize i didnt need to buy a new copy and could the vista to 7 to work i just didnt want to mess with vista anymore and through my work i got a new copy of 7 home premium 64 bit oem for $20.

im for sure going straight to 7, vista is the worst peice of crap this side of 2000/me.

im still concerned that the ssd they send me is going to have issues. its virtually the same drive. corsair force however its a 180gb not the 125 and its got slightly faster read speed.

should i be concerned that this ssd wont be a stable install also?? between going straight to 7 and bypassing vista(which the mobo doesnt support vista) im hoping all issues resolved. however still concerned. should i load sata drivers when installing windows??
