Hi all:

Here's my rig:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
GPU: MSI Nvidia GTX 970 Gaming
SSD: Crucial MX200 250GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB
RAM: Patriot Viper III, PV316G186C0K, 2x8GB
MBD: MSI Z97 PC Mate
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B2
CASE: Apevia Cruiser3 Green

I also have an external mic (phantom power), gaming headset, mouse, keyboard, and Oculus Rift S connected.

Don't know what happened exactly. I set up my Rift S yesterday and everything was working fine. Put in the new RAM sticks (the viper IIIs) today. After installing the RAM sticks, I went into th BIOS and enabled OC Genie for the first time ever. Everything booted up okay and I played some Oculus. Then I shut down Oculus and ran to the the bathroom. Came back and it was off, with the lights flashing on (like trying to start up) and then off repeatedly, and I smell a slight burnt electrical smell.

I powered it off and tried switching back to my previous RAM. Same result.

I thought maybe it was all too much for my PSU, so I looked online for a good, easy PSU test. Someone said disconnect everything from it, and then use a jumper to short the green (fan) and black (gnd) wires in the MOBO connector together. If the fan turns on, the PSU is good. The fan turned on so I think the PSU is okay.

Next I tried disconnecting everything except the MOBO, CPU, and CPU fan. The CPU fan does the same things the case fans / lights were doing (on and off).

I assume that means my MOBO is dead? Am I correct? Anything I can do to save it?

Solution
This morning I reconnected everything except for the MOBO connector (even left the CPU power on the motherboard connected) and did the jumper trick. Everything powered up. So I'm pretty confident now that it is the motherboard.
