Hello,

I just purchased the following for my new build:

Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150
MSI Z97A GAMING 7 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Motherboard
EVGA Supernova 850 Gold PSU
CORSAIR Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
MSI GTX 980TI GAMING 6G (Dont have yet, newegg is still sold out)

I already have a HAF 932 case and the disk drives/HDD's.

My primary question is about the bios update on the MOBO. Ive read ALOT of horror stories about updating the MSI boards bios. I would honestly rather not mess with it. I dont plan to overclock, will it be necessary to update it? I would rather just leave it alone than risk having it fail. I just didnt want to not update it and have issues with my build.

I would assume it will be fine "as is", but I wanted to confirm before I start putting everything together.

Solution
I have a msi motherboard and DO NOT update your motherboard through msi live update. That is how people brick their motherboards.
Download the update via MSI website here is the link that is specifically for your motherboard.
http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-7.html#down-bios

After you download it, put the file on a usb stick, go to the bios and choose usb flash.
Follow the onscreen steps and you are done.
That is how I update my bios. My mb is a MSI Z97 GAMING 3

If you want to see a video scroll to the bottom of the page and in red writing it should say how to update it safely

Hope this helps :)
most motherboard bricking are from people using the windows updater and anti virus or another program causing the updater to hang and bricking there mb. if you have to update the bios use the updater inside the bios.

the newest bios file is 1.a for if your going to run a brodwell cpu. the last bios file is 1.9. when you get the mb look at the box or the cmos chip for the bios label on the mb. if it at 1.9 you dont have to do anything.
bios updates are needed some times if they update cpu or ram code for newer ram or cpu. or there a bug with some hardware and there mb as if you read the bios update for 1.9 it fixes issues with some usb keyboards.

Okay I will likely get it installed and see how it goes without updating anything. Ill also check to see which version mine came with first. Hopefully it wont need updated as those horror stories just get to me. Granted alot of people probably dont do it the correct way but it still makes me a little nervous.
