Multiple Boot issues with new ssd

First of all, here are my system specs:

Dell Studio XPS 435mt running Vista 64-bit
cpu: i7 920 processor @ 2.67 ghz
gpu: xfx radeon 6970
PSU: antec earthwatts 650w
RAM: stock 6GB

BIOS only has ATA or RAID options available for drive config. No AHCI.

Okay, so firstly I swapped my gpu and upgraded my psu to accommodate it. Since this took up space, I bought a dock for my OS HDD to run in. It is connected via eSata, and everything ran well.

A few weeks ago I bought the Crucial 128GB m4 SSD to make booting faster. I installed my operating system on the SSD from the dell OS DVD.

I tried to boot fromthe computer, and I had the option to select which OS. I selected the appropriate one, and the green loading bar appears for a few seconds and disappears. Then the screen stays blank for approximately 5 minutes. I gave it a few more tries, but it kept taking that amount of time.

Then, I read the optical drive can be an issue so I went into the BIOS and disabled everything at boot, except for the SSD and the original HDD. The boot time did not change. I finally unplugged my SATA optical drive from the system, and the boot went as quickly as I had hoped (30-40 seconds from power on to full desktop). But now if I want to use a disc, I have to plug the drive back in after turning off the computer, and then endure a REALLY long boot. What could be the issue?

On a side note, maybe unrelated, when I choose the SSD as the only boot device I get this message "No boot device available". I then have to go back in and add the HDD to the boot device list. I don't understand why this could be the case, as the SSD has the OS installed as well and I know everything is running off it when I boot from it. Help please?

Any questions, let me know. If anyone can shed some light on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Matt

You get the no boot device message because your Vista boot loader is probably on the HDD, you can move it to the SSD like THIS. There are probably also some Dell OEM partitions for doing re-installations on your HDD, and you need those unless you have a full Windows install disk and not just the Dell labeled disks.
