Dear Experts at Tom's Hardware,

Greetings from India.

I have basic level knowledge of network and setups with a home and small office setup and my ISP is ACT Fiber. My house is on the Ground and First Floors and office is on the Second Floor. My main modem cum router is iBall Baton WRX-150N with a default IP of 192.168.1.1. I have 2 network switches connected which give LAN connection to around 13-14 desktops. From the two network switches, I have direct LAN cables running into the Ground and First Floors of my house. My second router is Digisol DG-HR3400 with default IP of 192.168.2.1.

Existing Setup: My setup was iBall on Second Floor (Office) and Digisol on First Floor. The iBall router is connected to the ISP's cable in PPPoE mode with ID and Password entered. My Digisol modem is in DHCP mode with the LAN cable connected into the WAN port. It was very fine till now. No network conflicts. WiFi was working perfectly and all desktops workings were also working perfectly fine. I was also able to access the settings of both iBall and Digisol without any issues using their respective IP's.

New Setup: I have a DLink ADSL 2750U modem cum router lying with me. Though its an ADSL modem which doesnt have any use and I needed a new router to boost my signal on the Ground Floor, I thought I can use this to just extend my internet. There is also LAN cable ready which prompted me to connect it at the Ground Floor. The default IP for this device is also 192.168.1.1. The moment I connected this into the network, I have been having an unstable network. LAN and Internet working intermittently for certain desktops etc. The issues is resolved whenever I disconnect it from the network.

Then I thought maybe since the IP is 192.168.1.1 which is the same as my main iBall router, I should try and check if 192.168.3.1 would work. So I changed the IP in LAN settings of my DLink router to 192.168.3.1. The logic was, since my Digisol with similar setup and IP 192.168.2.1 is working perfectly, same should be the case with my DLink router as well.

Issue: The issue persists. Once the DLink router comes into play, the entire network goes for a toss and becomes unstable. Internet and LAN keep working intermittently. Network does not work.

Queries:
1) How do I configure the DLink router correctly so that there are no network conflicts?

2) In the existing setup, I was not able to access the desktops and printers while connected the Digisol WiFi Access Point. I could only access them when I am connected to the iBall Access Point. I played around a bit and identified that Bridge Mode can help me do this. However, I would like to know, does it make the network unstable or cause any issues ? This gives me the comfort to access network files, printers etc sitting at the Ground and First Floors instead of walking into the office for every small thing.

Thanks in advance ! :)

Best Regards
Vinay

You can only have a single DHCP server in your LAN. If you have cabled wan-lan then the LAN networks are different....this causes a different problem related to sharing though. If you connect lan-lan they are the same network.

The way it should work if you run them as AP is your main router would be say 192.168.1.1 You would assign IP say 192.168.1.200 and 192.168.1.201 to your other 2 AP. You would disable the DHCP on both AP devices. You would cable LAN-LAN.
Your problem likely is you did not disable the DHCP server on the new router and the machines are getting ip addresses from the wrong device.

You want to run all your routers as AP so you have a single subnet controlled by your main router. Mostly this is cable lan-lan, disable the DHCP, assign a IP that does not conflict

Thanks bill001g for the answer. My Digisol router is DHCP enabled and it does not cause any problems of this type.. so shouldnt it be the same with my DLink router as well ?

My DLink however, I have assigned 192.168.1.2 and now its working perfectly... My office network is stable as well ! My main router is IP 192.168.1.1 and I have tried to configure my Digisol router to be DHCP disabled and assigned 192.168.1.3 but couldnt get it working.. Maybe I have done something wrong.. I have left it in the original way i.e. with IP 192.168.2.1 and it works fine.. it is assigning IP's as 192.168.2.xxx for any devices I'm connecting and they are all working fine somehow.. Any thoughts on how or why ? It should also face the same issues as my DLink router. BTW, my Digisol's LAN cable is directly connected to the iBall router itself but the DLink LAN cable comes a network switch.. Could this be the reason ?

You are running the digisol as a router. It will be fine except if someone on the 192.168.1.x network need to get to a shared file on the 192.168.2.x network.

It does not matter if a switch is in the path they are completely transparent. Any difference would be finding the options in the software to make it work. Maybe the digisol is strange device you can not make work as a AP. Hard to say when you deal with lesser known brands.

Hey bill001g.. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.. I seem to have to figured the problem out.. I plugged the lan cable into the WAN port of Digisol with DHCP off.. Thats why it was giving issues.. The moment I plugged it into a LAN port, it was working fine..

So bottomline, I disabled DHCP on both routers.. Reconfigured the IP of both routers based on 192.168.1.xxx ..
Now my internet is working fine, able to access the network and printers and my entire connection is stable as well.. this was a learning experience..

The Digisol modem had one strange thing though.. Internet was working totally fine from 1-1.5 years with DHCP enabled and the LAN cable plugged into the WAN port with IP 192.168.2.1 .. no network issues whatsoever.. but the modem itself is of good quality.. using it from 2 years 24 hrs everyday without any issue.. it also gives me almost 98%-100% speed of my LAN connection... iBall has been running same way from the past 3-4 yrs so even though they maybe a lesser known brands outside India, they are pretty good !
