Just a brief description of my current setup:
Vista 64 bit
8 gb ram
gigabyte GA-970A-D3
sapphire 280x 3gb
Corsair 120gb sata II ssd

Let me preface my question by saying that everything as it is now, works fine. There were two problems though. First, my SSD did not fully utilize my mobo's Sata III functionality, and support for vista was neigh.

So, I made the decision to purchase a copy of win 8.1 Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 MKNSSDEC240GB 240GB from newegg, and I have never been terrorized by such problems I encountered before in my life.

At first, everything seemed more than fine. The speed at which my computer now functioned was astonishing. Then, mysteriously, my installation of win 8.1 disappeared. No boot device found.

I booted into my old vista version with no challenges, explored the mushkin drive and it showed the installation of windows was there. I tried again, no joy. NO boot device.

Reinstalled windows. Everything seemed fine. I was tabbing windows, when suddenly the screen went black and strange noises came out of my speakers. I rebooted, and experienced this problem another four times.

I ran various disk checking utilities ( I forget which, ATTO and M$ i believe), and everything came back fine. No problems, yet I was experiencing issues. I contacted mushkin and they advised to do an rma with them. I decided it was cheaper and safer just to return it to newegg. I'm not going to throw good money after bad.

I guess my question is, are there problems with SSDs that cannot be detected by disk checking utilities? It is so frustrating I am (well *was* i guess) having significant problems to the point my computer was untrustworthy and I had to return the SSD. I certainly don't trust mushkin so I refuse to do an RMA with them.

Are there other ways to test an SSD other than conventional means? I feel I need to buy a ~240 gb SSD w/ sata III but after this experience I need to be absolutely certain about its stability.
