I've been holding off on building my own PC for quite some time. Getting every penny's worth out of this Dimension 8400, I have made several upgrades to keep running, the way I wanted it to, along the way (PSU, HDD, graphics card). Well, I am ready to give this relic a bit of rest...

After sorting out some other finances, I have finally made the plunge. Parts should be here this morning! 😀

^just in case 😉

I also snatched up a 64GB samsung DUO 3.0 USB flash drive, because i needed an extra one that wasnt being used for installing OS's. I almost forgot about that! Would have been upset if I had to move a bunch of files around just to do that! $23 from amazon...

I haven't added it all up completely, but you get the picture (right under $2,000, if you include rebates/sales...)

I started researching from this forum, got advice from multiple other sources/reviews, and finally had a discussion with an online friend, who basically put a list together for me! Most of which I followed, because its exactly what i wanted!
Here's the list he made for me:

I hope to do a little bit of everything with this PC, but I wanted something highly functional, so I can get back into learning programming. Hopefully, I will be able to play a few games on high, but that isnt my main concern. I don't game. Well I have never done so on PC, and I haven't touched my PS3 or 360 in a long, long time. But hopefully I will be able to at least play around a little bit with some newer titles on the 960...I will probably upgrade the GPU, if I find gaming something I want to do more of. As long as I can retire the dell, Im happy!

If you guys wanna see pics, lemme know. Hopefully I don't run into any issues with this build, but I will update if I do, or any tips I may have. Thanks for being here/looking!

OS wise, I will probably end up installing windows 10, and then Arch linux. I've been wanting to switch back to linux for a long time, but I've been running Windows 7.

Question: What do you think? Anything I should get instead? I'm getting the GPU for a little under $200 with rebates, and thats probably the most I wanna spend there...

The PSU you got is WAY overkill for what you need for that build you don't need more than 550W and you have 1000W it wont cause an issue you just spent more money than you needed too, the I7-6700k is a bit overkill for normal gaming and the I5-6600k works just as well as the I7 you oculd change this without a performance decrease and put the extra money toward a better GPU such as the GTX 970

Haha yea, i did estimate my wattage to be just under 600, but Id rather be upgrade proof. Plus, that corsair comes with a 6 year warranty. I was really sold on getting the i7 6700K, even though i overpaid for it. I would've like to get a better GPU, but that came as a latter priority to other core components. I totally agree with your logic though! :)

Looks like my RAM might not make it here today! I have off work today, and I was hoping to get everything. Damn UPS surepost... might be able to pick it up at the PO later though... 😛
