I keep finding out and squashing the reasons my computer ALWAYS wakes up in the wee hours of the morning or late at night and it always finds new reasons to wake itself up, now I'm stumped. I've already disabled all the waketimers, I've disabled every device that's able to wake the computer except for the power button which I can't disable, I've set wake on lan to off, and it was all FINE for about a month! now it's stubbornly insisting on starting up at around 8:30 pm after I normally leave for work if I'm not delayed. I ran powercfg -lastwake and -waketimers. there are no waketimers like I'd thought. and lastwake only shows Wake History Count - 1. Wake History [0]. Wake Source Count - 0. what is going on?

It's Windows 10, that's what it does. You will find all kinds of things in Task Scheduler that check for updates + upload telemetry to Microsoft, and important waketimers cannot be disabled. If you remove the triggers, they will only return again next month after updates are installed.

For a bedroom computer Windows 7 is much less likely to wake you up, because the waketimer settings work.

None of this is true. All of the processes that you describe happen normally while the computer is asleep. There are other issues with the OP's PC that needs to be discovered.

Make sure you have the setting disabled where moving your mouse can wake it, as with windows 10, literally anything can wake up your pc it seems. Also Windows 10 will often just wake up your machine for updates/update checks. My recommendation is to do what Wolf had said, and just turn off your monitor power, saves the trouble of dealing with this.

Again, as I said earlier, updates and checking for updates normally happen while the computer is asleep. I highly recommend doing what Wolf recommends.

as I've stated I've made sure nothing can power on my pc except for the power button, and there are no waketimers, and I've even rooted around in the deeper settings and functions to disable wake on lan and several other things I forget the specifics on. I always make sure to keep updated and it has never updated me automatically if I can save and do it manually where I can watch it first. I also keep my screen and volume knob off whenever I'm not using it, it doesn't bother me in terms of sound but that it's turning on at all.
