My computer turns on then off after a few seconds, then back on again.

Everything fit in well, and I was really happy with myself- until I turned it on. It stayed on for about 5 seconds before shutting off, then turning back on again on its own.

My suspicion for the problem is the 4 pin CPU cable powering the i3-4170. My power supply has 8 pin but I only plugged in four of them because that is all the motherboard offers.

Can someone confirm if I am correct, suggest what I can do, etc?
Do I have to buy a full new motherboard, or is there a way to plug in the fourth pin to my power supply?

No. No such thing. If motherboard supports 4-pin CPU connector then it is enough. PSU's CPU (EPS) connectors come in 4+4 format. Nothing to worry about it. You need to clear the CMOS. Do that and give it a try. Also, update your mobo's BIOS.

How do I clear CMOS and update BIOS? And what if it shuts off before I get the chance? It does not stay on long enough...

Refer to page 29 of the user manual and follow the instructions to clear the CMOS. Use screwdriver and touch the both pins at a time for 2 seconds or so. This would reset the CMOS. Try it and then try powering on the PC.

Did that, but it was not the problem. I figured out it was the RAM, don't know why but taking them out and reconnecting fixed the problem. I get to the BIOS now.
