My CPU has suddenly lost 3 physical cores and 2 Hyper-threads, Please help (Specs in Thread).

I have an Intel core i7 2600 @3.4GHz, I first found out that i had lost the cores (non-operational) when I went to play Minecraft, I went on task manager to set its Processes Affinity up to 2 cores, but when i tried to do it, there were only two cores left, 1 physical 2 hyper-thread, in the list, so I went to the performance tab and realised that the were only 2 core graphs where there is supposed to be 8. I then went on CPU-ID and it said that I had 1 Core and 2 Hyper-threads, it usually says I have 4 cores and 8 hyper-threads, so I instantly knew there was something wrong. Could someone please explain to me why this has happened and is this permanent or just temporary. I haven't been able to restart yet because I am doing important work which I am under a tight schedule with.

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 @3.4GHz
GFX: GigaByte GTX660 OC
RAM: 8GB @ 678MHz
Motherboard: Dell Y2MRG (OY2MRG)

Dunno how much anyone can help you if you're not willing to reboot the computer and check the BIOS. You might take a gander at Event Viewer (if you're using Windows).

Could be software/OS, could be a bad CPU, or a bad PSU I suppose. Please post further when your project's finished.

EDIT: If you're doing something important though and really feel like you can't even reboot the computer, please at least save often, and preferably on multiple disks -- cause you might be due for a serious and catastrophic failure.

Yes I am saving to HDD and USB Stick, I will post more after restart, Thanks for the Help. But my Computer is no more than a Year old, this kind of CPU failure is often found 5 years after purhcase if at all.

I have seen this happen occasionally, when windows drops some cores for some reason. I'm not sure what the root cause is, but you can reset the CMOS (try that) in the BIOS (either via jumper/switch or BIOS option).

Yeh I was thinking about it, I will try when I have finished my project I'll let you know if it works.
