[SOLVED] My dead PSU killed my Mobo and not sure if something more

First before you ask me here are the specs:
FX-8350
8GB DDR3
Zotac GTX 1060 6GB AMP Edition
ASRock 970M Pro3
250GB Samsung 850 Evo
2x Barracuda 500GB hard drives
And PSU...well...
Yesterday while I was playing on my PC it just stopped. I thought it was overheated so I waited an hour. But when I tried to power it on nothing happened. No fans, no beep, nothing! It happened just after I finished cleaning it up. There was a strange smell of something burned from the PSU. My PSU was a generic one, so I guess it was the problem. Tried changing the RAM slots, with/without GPU, hard drives, keyboard or mouse, resetting the BIOS with the CMOS battery or the jumper but sadly nothing happened. Then I knew the PSU was dead. So I got 2 new PSU's from my uncle because he just have so many. One was german 350W, the other-a generic 450W. Both turned on the PC but the Monitor did not showed anything at all and no beep, just fans spinning. I think that the old one killed my mobo. Now Im afraid if the mobo or the PSU killed the GPU or CPU too. Could it be that? I tested the hard drives and the ssd and they were working thankfully. But Im not sure for the CPU or the GPU. Im already thinking of buying new parts for a total overhaul. I mean ryzen 5, 16gb ddr4 and totally a new and better PSU. I'd be happy if the GPU still works. I got it jsut 1 month ago.

Absolutely no doubt that was your problem. Unbranded / generic ones have the potential to die sooner, and if they do, take other components with them.

One was german 350W, the other-a generic 450W.

Hopefully you don't stick with generic ones or the issue could happen again!

There really is only one way to find out, swap out the components with other ones and retest, there's no real magic solution to testing if it has damaged others. Looking for blown capacitors on your motherboard may help, but rarely you'll see any.

Unfortunately this is the downfall of poor quality PSUs, if they go, there is every likelihood they'll take other components with them.

If the PC powers but you get no signal, I would lean to GPU first, then MB, then CPU.

Unfortunately the best part of the system, the 1060, is likely dead. I would at minimum replace the mobo and test gpu.

So if the GPU has somehow survived I will get a Ryzen 5, 16gb of ddr4, a mobo for around 120$ and a PSU from Cooler master 500W. Other wise if the GPU is dead ( which if true im going to be really sad ) I can sell some of my other parts since i have quite the collection and get something similar or better. Any recommendations for 1080p High 60fps?

Most Cooler Master PSUs aren't very good. You very likely got into this problem in the first place by cheaping out on the PSU, don't squander your expensive lesson!

As for GPU, the 1660 Ti is arguably in the sweet spot right now for a 1080p user. The RX 580 works fine for 1080p, but you'll get more longevity with the 1660 Ti.

I would go for a 1660ti or 2060.
Im assuming the drives werent killed so you could maybe reuse those and the old case.

Thanks for the advice with the PSU. I guess I'll spend more for the PSU. As for the GPU I will look forward if there are any nice deals with the GTX 1660 ti.

The drives are ok. I've tested them on another pc and they are ok. The case is also reusable. I'll look for some nice PSU deals.

Wow. Thanks mate for the list. Never thought the community here is that good. Yeah you did go a little bit overkill with the PSU. I would for lower. Maybe something like 550-600W. Dont need more. Now that i think about it...the pc is basically a sleeper. The case is so old that it has a Floppy drive and no the case is not one of those old white cases built before 2000. I think its a 2004-6 model XD

The V (or Vanguard? if memory serves well) series of 80+ gold CoolerMaster CPUs are 650-750-850W etc.

They have both semi-modular and modular models and they were decent units with all Japanese caps and good test results.

Not sure if they had a 550W though and if it was as good.

A SeaSonic Focus is a very good choice too.

Generally, SeaSonic I feel has the lowest failure rates and longest warranties, even though I use a Corsair 550 watt in my main pc.

XD i was also thinking about Seasonic focus but 550w not 650w. Anyway...the gpu is not any worse. Its still 1660 ti, just a little bit of different clock speeds.

Im kinda strange how people spend all of their money on the main parts and forget about the PSU. From this forum Ive learned how important it is. In the future I'll be careful about wgat PSU I get.

Uhh thats bad. I guess I'll go with the focus series. So lets round it up. Ryzen 5 2600, 16gb dd4 3000, msi b450 mobo, msi 1660 ti and seasonic focus 550w gold. Not bad for mid range i guess?
