[SOLVED] My DVD driver can only read CDs

I just installed an somewhat old DVD-player for my computer, but it only reads CDs and I cant get it to read any DVDs. Why is that?

the CD uses a different laser than the DVD. the CD uses a infrared beam, the DVD uses a different laser diode.
your device has both and the one that reads DVD's died. now its a CD device only

would be like trying to read an old record with a pencil instead of the needle because the needle broke. pencil still works though

Windows doesn't have a DVD decoder codec anymore. install VLC and see if they play now.
