I just bought a EVGA GTX 980 which I thought was a big upgrade from my AMD Radeon r9 280 but I seem to only getting a average of 120 on csgo and around 20 fps on arma 3 even with all settings at lowest quality. Any ideas? I've tried loads of things, my drives are up to date, PC is on balanced power saving and windows is up to date.

PC specs

EVGA GTX 980 sc
AMD Athalon 750k
16gb ram

Could i buy a Intel i7 6700k and just use that because my motherboard is already about £70 to £100

But what if a i7 6700k can already fit my motherboard, I would be wasting my money, right?

Okay so if I get a i7 6700k I will need to get a new motherboard that will work with the i7 6700k. If I get the i7 6700k I cam sell my current CPU and motherboard and buy a new motherboard and a i7 6700k. Know any cheap motherboards that will work with the i7 6700k and won't brake down as soon as I use it with my GTX 980?

I would advise against getting a Skylake processor right now. A lot are overpriced for marginal performance differences between a 4000-series processor. Go with the i5-4590, and if you're really concerned about power, the i5-4690(K or not is your choice). Based off what you're posting about, you won't need or want the features in an i7 processor. i5 is all the performance without the hyper-threading, which isn't used in vast majority of games.

I don't really have a budget, but I don't wanna pay over £400 for a motherboard and a CPU. I thought a Intel i7 6700k and Asus z170-pro would be a good choice. I also want to consider my setup bc I'm going to get a white window case because my setup is black and white.

Since you can overclock non-k skylake CPUs then this would be my recomendation:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£269.60 @ More Computers)
Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£91.31 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £360.91

Have in mind that you'll not be able to use your current RAM, since skylake uses DDR4, the haswell i5 that i suggested before will work with your current ram, if you dont want to buy new ram and still want more horsepower then get this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£215.26 @ Dabs)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£105.00 @ More Computers)
Total: £320.26

The xeon performs like a i7 but it doesnt has a integrated GPU, and the z97 board will let you use another 980 for SLI down the way, if you want to overclock then just get a 4690k or a 4790k.
