my EXTERNAL HDD has gone bad

i cannot access my external hdd and it freezez my laptop and pc when plugged in .... it doesnt even show the files sometimes and the device isnt sometimes recognized
WHAT SHOULD I DOOO?

Sounds like it has died probably time to replace it.

This is why we stress backups here so much.

anyway formatting would just delete everything on it. You said it freezes your PC when you plug it in does the PC unfreeze so that you can do anything?

If it sometimes works, copy the files from it when it works and replace it. Did you try a different cable? If the drive inside is a standard one you can also try removing it from the enclosure and hooking it up as a secondary in a desktop PC or us a different enclosure with it, issue may be with the USB interface.
