This is what I plan to build. Does this seem like a solid setup? Is everything compatible?

you might save money by getting the VIII version of that motherboard since you plan on using a skylake cpu. I just don't know if it has the m2 support. otherwise it's the same board

That's ones only $5 more than the one I originally had selected but I'm guessing the 7200rpm is better than the 5400

I had originally selected the one you mentioned but found the IX with more features. The only weird thing I noticed was the area where all the ports are (USB, etc.) was shaped a little different and wasn't sure if it would comply with the selected case

general rule of thumb for ddr4 288-pin RAM... every 8gb is worth about $50-57 for the most affordable choice. I wouldn't pay anything over $210 for a 2x16gb(since these are usually on sale) pack unless it's one of those super-duper cool looking/super-low cas rating types.

so i got everything, and of course something has to not be right, right? so all the parts for the cooler master are not in the box, go figure. do you have a suggestion for something else i could get as cooler master has done went and tried my patience.

no clue. never used an aftermarket cpu cooler since I've never overclocked.
