My first Rig

Hi guys. I just finished compiling the parts for my first rig. Would anyone like to make any suggestions? I'd appreciate it. Especially for the MOBO and PSU


CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K
GPU - Gigabyte GTX 780
HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5"
SSD - Crucial 256GB MX100
RAM - Corsair Vengeance
Motherboard - Gigabyte Z97-D3H
PSU - Super Flower Golden Green 550W
Monitor - BenQ RL2455HM
Case - NZXT Phantom full

Change the GPU to GTX 970, and memory to Veng Pro/LP or G.Skill Ares/ RJX as Veng series is high profile which may obstruct in CPU cooler installation. Everything else is fine. WD Black isn't any better than Blue, it just has more warranty, feel free to go with Blue.

MEM - Be careful of those Vengeance modules. The tall heat spreaders can sometimes cause clearance issues with some CPU coolers.
PSU - No. Stick with XFX or Seasonic.

PSU : Would STRONGLY suggest a different, more reliable one.

Here is a list of tiered PSUs by quality. Stick to tier1, tier2a and tier2b.

CPU : If this is for gaming mostly, an I5 will serve you just as well as an I7 and save you some cash.

Motherboard : Keep in mind that motherboard will never allow you to add a second card for crossfire or SLI. It also does not overclock to well.

GPU : The GTX970 is faster and cheaper than a GTX780, also has more RAM and uses less power.

For crying out load, please don't suggest that overpriced GTX980. Its only 10% faster but cost 60%+ more than a GTX970.

Apparently you guys dismissing the power supply no little about them. Superflower is right up there with Seasonic, in terms of quality. They are the same company that makes the Rosewill Capstones. 😉 I think they make the super nova gold G2's as well. That said, for a GTX 780, I would want a higher wattage one. The GTX 970 would be just fine with it, though, and would definitely recommend a GTX 970 over the 780.

SuperFlower indeed makes EVGA 2 series PSUs, and they're on par with SeaSonic as well, no need to change unless XFX/ SeaSonic are lower in price. XFX is made by SeaSonic anyways.

For the sole purpose of gaming, I'd get i5 (or Xeon if OP doesn't wanna OC) and upgrade the MoBo to SLI class.

PS: Gold green has been reviewed (450W model) by JhonnyGuru and got a 8.8 rating.

I would probably swap the PSU out for a big brand name (considering its the same price) I tried to find a review for the Super Flower and they were pretty average.

No after market cooler for the i7-4790k? if you plan on overclocking it I would advise a company's hydro range.

If you not then you don't need the K version maybe just get the i7-4790?.

Also food for thought is 780 vs 970 - from what I'm hearing the 970 is a clear winner on price and consumption, performance is close to neck and neck.

Super Flower make a good psu however I would bump it up to a 650 if possible. WD Black is much better that the blue besides having a better warranty.

SuperFlower Golden Green is the same platform found in Rosewill Capstone.

550W is plenty for an i7-4790K + GTX780 UNLESS you flash the GTX780 with custom BIOS to break the design power limits and put it under water cooling. Provided all overclocking falls within the realm of "practical" on the CPU and GPU, a 4790K+780 will never pull more than ~400W combined, leaving ~150W for other system components on a 550W PSU (FYI: most 1150 socket systems have <50W of additional power dissipation beyond the CPU and GPU).
