My gpu is getting quite heated up even at idle .

I have a brand new r9 285, about a week old. I use afterburner to make a custom fan curve but even on idle, the card heats upto 40 degree Celsius and above . Its winter now, and the ambient temperature is no more then 21-25degrees at max.

Can you give us your full PC specs please?

And does your case have subtle air flow?

as far as the specs goes , I am using a fx-6300 processor, a Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3(rev. 4) , a corsair Rm750 and have ordered a Corsair Vengeance pro kit which should arrive by next week . As of now, I just have a basic corsair xms3 1600fsb cl 11. The case I am using is a nzxt phantom 410 with one 120mm(intake) in front, a 120mm cm sickle flowX 2000rpm on the side panel (intake) , another 120mm fan hanging on the hdd bay, 1 exhaust 120mm nzxt fan at the rear , 1 nzxt 120mm fan on top (exhaust) and a 120mm Corsair on top ( exhaust).

How many monitors do you have hooked up to the R9 285?

What are your load temps?

I have a single 1600x900 monitor and at load ( was playing hitman absolution at ultra ) it went up to 65-70 .

You've got nothing to worry about if your load temps are fine.

What's the fan speed at idle?

I have a custom curve on After burner, at 40 degrees the fan speed is probably around 40%

You're fine as long as load temps are in control.

update : at 90% load while playing advanced warfare , the gpu ramped up to 80 degrees with the fans on auto mode
