What cpu should i upgrade too? I am looking to spend no more than 350$. I have a GeForce rtx 2060 and 16gb of ram. I have a Prime z270-k motherboard and am willing to upgrade it if i have to. I want to upgrade to something that has at least 6 cores. My main games are rust, gtav rp (FiveM), and rocket league. I need something better because my FiveM is constantly crashing and running at 100% usage on my cpu. Please give me some suggestions of what I should upgrade to.

The i7 7700 is the best you can do on that motherboard. I suggest maybe going 12400 and motherboard to go with rather than buying used. Can reuse your current DDR 4 ram.

^link text says 12400f (f stands for no integrated graphics) but that's a typo because it's the regular 12400 with igpu. Just for price reference.

$343

Need to consider cooling as well.

You'll also be wanting to reinstall Window after a motherboard change if weren't aware. If you don't have an Ms account sign in, create one before going ahead so you can deactivate your current licence from your old motherboard before activating on new.

If you will be building a whole new system, consider longevity. Although Intel is the cheaper overall upgrade path (especially if you stick with DDR4), LGA1700 boards are a dead end from a CPU upgrade standpoint (kinda like where you are now). I would caution going to AM4 for the same reason. Even though there are some pretty sweet bundle deals around, it's a dead end platform.

If you can wait until the next Intel platform comes out, or AM5 upgrades get cheaper, that is the route I would go. Especially if it means you can save more for the upgrade.

Why do you say that ? What games are you trying to play and not hitting 60+ fps ?

4c/4t gaming is dead. Even a lowly R5 1600 can handle newer games better.

I personally would go with a 5700x, on a low budget setup.

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 ATX AM4 Motherboard ($169.99 @ B&H)
Total: $349.99

When buying new, buy current gen.
I might suggest the I5-13400:

Yes, the F model is cheaper, but integrated graphics is good insurance for $15 more.
It comes with an adequate cooler.

Here is a review:

Most any lga1700 motherboard will do, but I would not buy the cheapest.
Look for a MATX DDR4 motherboard with a B660 chipset.
They will be $100-$150 or so.
I like this MSI B660M bazooka with a good vrm cooler and power capability:

You can reuse your DDR4 ram.

That's not what I asked, I asked what games are you trying to play and not hitting 60+ FPS. That CPU can easily still manage 60+ fps gaming even in 2023.

The problem is the minimum FPS, not max. 4c/4t can easily become a stuttering mess, on a modern system. All it takes is Windows deciding to do something in the background. There's a reason i3's are now 4c/8t, times have changed. Even an i3 12100 would walk all over a 7600k, just due to IPC improvements alone.
