Just on the voltage I loaded up CPU-ID's Hardware Monitor and grabbed this:

While I'm the OP you really should be talking now to slickncghia as looks like your both way ahead of me at 200 MHz base (well he has to make up for the All Black's 33 to 6 Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup New Zealand victory over the Australian Wallabies).

Your i5750.jpg shot shows a 200 MHz base with is already much better than mine so you shouldn't worry. Don't confuse the x20 results with the x24 turbo headlines.

ha, sorry for the hijack dude.

i seem to have a fsb wall at 212. the max ive got with 4 cores is 211 * 21 = 4431.

but with 2 cores enabled tubo ups the multiplier to 24 as you know and ive gotton the bclk to 188.

ive just run it at 4.512ghz (yep still on the intel hsf)

superpi 1m = 9.360

ill stop hijacking now

So If i have been reading this thread correctly, you could take an i5 core and with an air cpu cooler like a Zalman and OC it to 3.8-4.0ghz and be pretty stable and reliable? Also what effect would running ddr2 ram be? or if you are going to OC you will need ddr3 ram? I am looking to save a few bucks on my next build by moving some components over like memory, dvd drive, graphics card. Then over the next year and a half upgrade those pieces for ddr3, maybe a go to a blu ray burner and a new graphics card. I am new to OC so when i do OC it, I would perfer not to cause any problems I am not going to be able to troubleshoot out with what limited knowledge I have about OC

LGA 1156 boards use DDR3 Ram. afaik, there is no way to use DDR2 ram since DDR3 is slotted differently. aside from that DDR2 timings and voltages are very different, so even if you could use DDR2 ram in a DDR3 slot it wouldn't be recommended. You can use your old GPU and other components without issue, but you'll need to buy new ram if you're getting a p55 or x58 chipset.

I've been reading this thread as it develops in perspective to learn something as I intend to get an i5 as soon as I get home (1 week now yay)
I have only one question so far, how exactly do you "tune" the rams as you oc the cpu?
Doesnt tweaking the Bus Speed and QPI link make that a necessary step?

tune?
memory has an adjustable multiplier that works in conjunction with the bclk.

as you change the bclk (fsb) the memory will be running at faster mhz. stock its 1333. (133 bclk x 10 memory multiplier)

if the bus speed is 200 then you will have to change your memory multiplier as it will not run at 2000mhz.

my board has 6,8,10.

ie 6 * 200 = 1200 or 8 * 200 = 1600mhz

and so on. find what your memory will run at and then optomise. mine runs sub 1600 so for most high overclocks i need to run the 6x multiplier.

is that what you mean?

Yep,that is it thanks.
No need to change voltage for memory for it go any faster? Or the voltage changes auto and you have to keep an eye on the values?

i have been running 1.64vdim (memory volts) for overclocks and left it at 1.5 for stock. thats just guessing no real testing behind wether it was needed or not
