My iomega ego external hard drive suddenly not recognised

The little board is the controller board(USB -> SATA), it comes off.

You have to remove the board(pulls right off like a sata plug), then you can plug the drive into the computer it self.
Take care when holding the drive as the top is thinner and more fragile then a normal hard drive.
With the drive installed in the system(connect SATA + Power) boot up and windows should see it as long as the drive is not damaged(it may take a few min to detect it, may even ask you to restart, i never restart :p).

hi, I thought the board came off. what do I have to do to connect this to my pc. do I have to take the side off and plug it in somewhere?

Yes, you need to connect it to both data(normally red) and power (red, black, black, yellow and sometimes orange)

If you are unsure, check your DVD drive if it has those cables, connect it there(disconnect it to connect drive. all with the power OFF), do not let the drive board touch other boards in the system

hi nuke, connected it via my dvd drive. absolutely fantastic everything there, must have ben the connector ot that little circuit board. will now transfer it all to new portable external drive when I have time. so relieved. have learned a lot through this and it is thanks to yourself that this has turned out well, I am so grateful as I am sure most people would have jsut thrown the drive away.
I will make sure I have backups fro now on. cheers
speak again, thanks again

Those small usb->sata boards tend to not last long with lots of use(not sure why), a friend game me 2 drives with failed boards, one lived, the other was in fact dead.

Glad to hear you got it working. As with the poster above, you can get yourself a hard drive enclosure for 2.5 inch sata drives and have it as an external again.

I need major help!!! I am going through a similar problem with my Iomega 500gb external hdd. First problem was my hdd was unplugged while saving files (by my 1yr old son) so it corrupted my files. Second I used Chkdsk to check the drive and Chkdsk deleted my files. Third I checked in the Device Manager my Iomega showed up there as RAW. I purchased a program that would find and repair the files so I could save them elsewhere. The difference is from my knowledge the hdd overheated while being scanned causing my circuit board to malfunction. Now the arm that reads the data is clicking to find proper positioning. When it doesn't find the correct position it stops and returns to its original position. This causes my hdd to be unresponsive. And it also causes my hdd to not show up in Windows. Is there any way I could replace the circuit board? Or is there a way connect it to a laptop or pc to make it work long enough to do my data recovery? Please help there aren't any Elite geeks where I live in Wilson NC and I don't have $1000 to pay to a specialist.
