My laptop connects to internet at slow speeds

At first i thought it was my wifi, but the IT guy just came in and tested his phone and got 100mpbs while i can only get 5 to 10 on my laptop, we also tried to plug the laptop in the modem and that didn't even help. He gave me a card to a freind who knows how to fix it but i want to know if it's possible to fix it myself, and how for that matter. I have a dell inspiron 15 7000 series windows 10, according to device manager my network adapter is intel dual band wireless AC 3165. Please help.

Someone from IT at work or technician via your ISP? How did he get involved to begin with?

Not being able to solve or address the issue beyond what little he seem to have attempted does not seem right.

And then giving you his "friend's card seems even more improper.

That said, there are two immediate things you can do:
'
1) Run the builtin Windows 10 troubleshooters. The troubleshooters may find and fix something.


2) Run and post the results of "ipconfig/all" (without quotes) via the Command prompt.


What makes and model are the modem and router? Or just make and model if a combo (modem/router) device?

Sorry for the late reply. I decided to let someone fix it, it was smartbytes, he uninstalled that and I was getting over 100mbps, but he also installed a bunch of other crap to try to find a way to fix it, so I just reseted my pc to factory settings to get rid of all it, figuring I could just uninstall smartbytes again when it resets, now I can't find smartbytes, it's not even installed and it's slow again. I should have never reset it. So, I know it's not a modem issue, it's a software issue.

ifg you did not do a factory restore but a windows 10 file clean up. start with intel chipset drivers and windows mei drivers. try using the intel driver update tool to get the newest drivers. same for the wifi and ethernet drivers try using google to find the newest drivers for them.
