My monitor and a hdmi port

before i built my new computer (this one right now) i used duel monitors however afterward when i got my new graphic card it had only one dvi port and the other port was a hdmi port. my graphic card is the Sapphire ATI HD7770 1GB GDDR5 2MDP/HDMI, i think anyways i brought a dvi to hdmi adapter and it just doesnt work, like nothing is happening with my 2nd monitor (its really old btw) but i tried with my new monitor and it didnt work either so i was wondering if the adapter was broken or is it just not compatible?

There are active and passive types of adapters. I suspect you will need an active one, so check with the place where you bought it to confirm what they sold you.
