Hello all,

This is my first post here, so hopefully I'll provide enough info for you to solve my problem. Thanks in advance.

I was browsing the internet today. I had many tabs open and I think I overloaded my computer a bit (although I've had many more tabs than this open in the past, and nothing happened then.). Suddenly, my computer's monitor just black screened. After a while (maybe a minute), a giant mouse pointer appeared, and then my desktop, with the chrome I had open. I quickly force stopped chrome with the task manager. AT the time, my resolution was set very low (everything looked big, like the windows and text) so I went into settings and changed my resolution to my native 1600 x 1200. But then, I noticed that my whole screen was blurry, ever so slightly, but enough to annoy me. Furthermore, everything looked a bit jumpy and my screen wasn't as fast/ clear as it used to be. I reset my display settings, although nothing happened. Also, when I looked at the display settings, they were clear and weren't blurry like the actual windows/desktop were. So I'm guessing it's not a problem with the monitor. I did some more digging and found out that in my display adapter settings, my screen's refresh rate was set to 64 hertz, even though my monitor is 60 hertz. There was no option to change this in the dropdown. And now that I think about it, I am getting some significant screen tearing that comes with having incorrect refresh rates. I couldn't figure out how to change my refresh rate, so I tried updating my drivers for my display and my display adapter (my monitor is connected in through DVI, through a displayport adapter, and into the computer with a displayport cable). The display driver updated, and the adapter driver did not, but neither improved my blurry screen problem. I have run out of ideas, so please help! Thank you in advance.

Computer Specs:

HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower
2 GB DDR2 RAM
CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Integrated Graphics
Display: Dell 2007FP
Windows 10 Home

P.S I am typing this on the same computer and monitor, so it's definitely readable, just pretty blurry. I want to fix this quick, so please help! Thanks.

This is why I asked bout checking device manager\drivers.

I had a client today that was using the general Intel HD Graphic Display drivers on Windows 10. It was working fine until the Creators update and now in device manager, she sees missing driver for that display card. On Intel's...

My monitor unfortunately doesn't have an auto adjust feature. I did try resetting the display settings, but this didn't help.

OSD is the "On Screen Display" meaning in the options menu of the monitor it's self. It wont be an auto adjust button but there should be an auto adjust feature you can select inside options menu of your monitor.

Press the menu button on your monitor and drill through the options until you find it.

I don't really have a spare monitor to test with. My dad uses the exact same monitor, but it's hooked up and I'm not allowed to access it right now. However, the OSD shows up crisp and clear, unlike the monitor. So I'm guessing it's a Windows problem.

Ok, here are my OSD options:
Brightness
Input Source
Color Settings
Image Modes
Display Settings
Menu Settings
PIP Settings

Which one would it be in? I can't find it.

It's the Dell 2007FP, which is pretty old. I've been through all the settings now and still can't find it. Are you sure it's not a problem with the 64 Hertz thing?

It says there auto adjust is not needed if connected through DVI. Also my monitor is 60 hz, not 75 hertz, and there is no option to change it back to 60 hz. And that guy has a different monitor, my monitor I just can't find the auto adjust.

I tried updating that driver and it said it was already up to date.

Weird. Normally a port wouldn't restrict a monitor from using a set hert rate. If it can use 60-144 herts. you normally can downscale to any of them. It shouldn't be dependant on the port it is plugged into.

However, that's an older monitor so.. who knows.

Have you tried using another connection method such as DIV or VGA, HDMI etc...? Just as a test.

Actually, there is no official Windows 10 device driver from Intel or Microsoft that properly supports the Intel Q45 Integrated Graphics Controller. Intel has even said that they won't release an updated device driver for a product that old.

It was working fine until the Creators update and now in device manager, she sees missing driver for that display card. On Intel's site you can find drivers for it and it says it supports Windows 10. However, I think the Creators update dropped support for it, since no matter how I install it, Windows removes it automatically.

I've tried force installing also.

So this very well could be the problem.

Solution

Before the crash, it used to say 60 hertz. And the monitor was perfect and didn't have any problems. And I don't really have a VGA cable, and the monitor doesn't connect through HDMI.

It was working perfectly since the creator's update. No problems after updating. This only happened after the crash.

Did you run an sfc /scannow at a command prompt with administrator privileges to check for any system file corruption?

I ran it. There are no problems.

Yes!!! I fixed the problem. I looked at the Intel Q 45/43 Express Chipset (Display Adapter) Properties and they said that windows had stopped this device because it was not working properly. So, I went into Device Manager and uninstalled the device, including the device software, and rebooted. Now my screen looks perfectly normal!

Although I fixed my blurry display problem, my display is still set to 64 hertz, which is causing some screen tearing and stuttering. I need help to fix this!
