I noticed the other day that my current network protocol is 802.11n. I thought that was strange because I thought my router was 802.11ac, and it turns out it is. I don't know how to change this and I would like to know how.

the pc/laptop your using is probably only rated for "n" speeds. the router is capable of connecting devices from any of the past ratings (a,b,g,n) as well as the new ac. check the computer your on for what it's wifi card is actually capable of. if it is also an ac card and only connecting at n speeds, then you may need to go into the routers settings and set it back to ac speeds as somehow it got set to a slower speed. but check the wifi card first to be sure it is capable of running at ac speeds.

most new routers that are ac rated have two radios in them the 2.4g b/g/n and 5g ac side. by default both of them are turned on. if your wifi stick is n only it going to connect to the 2.4g side. you can tell by logging intot he router and check who is connected. it show your pc or laptop on the 2.4g radio and nothing on the 5g side.

That adapter should connect at the same speed then

Depends what you've got, whether it connects to 2.4 or 5 ghz.

I'm using a dual band modem/router here (but it's not AC). The USB adapters here are also dual band but not AC.

But even tho the adapters only support up to N, I can connect to either 2.4 or the 5 ghz connection (all 3 PC's here are connected to 5 ghz at the mo). As well as a Windows phone

Only devices that are connected to the 2.4 ghz connection, are the printer, and 2 bluray players. Since they dont support 5 ghz

looks like you need to log into the router and check the settings. there will be some for what type of connections to allow. it's possible it came with the 5 ghz disabled and it simply needs to be turned on. check those settings first to b sure it is set to send out the super signal.

The problem is that I don't know how to change my routers settings. When I type in my default gateway on my web browser, it pops up with the modem's settings and not the router's settings.

is this an isp provided modem/router? or one you bought?

the isp should be able to help if they gave it to you. if you bought it, then make a nice cup of tea and sit back and do some light reading of the manual (more than likely a digital version from the website). without witting in front of it myself, i can't really offer any insight into how your particular one works. post the model number and such here and when i get some spare time i'll be happy to skim the manual and see what it says about the speed settings but it might take me a day to get it read.

i just got home from a long vacation :) and am a bit backed up in my office.

No need to worry, I found out how to edit the routers settings. I went into the WiFi settings and added a name to the 5GHz network, and this somehow fixed the problem.
