So I've put together a build which I'll be getting soon...
IT'S REALLY BUDGET, and I probably won't be able to get anything better otherwise it'll get too expensive...

Attention: I changed part of the build! Please see below!

Here is the correct (new) build:

CPU: Intel Core i3-3220
RAM: G-Skill Ripjaws-X 4GB Kit
MoBo: ASUS P8H61-M-LX3-R2
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6670
Hard Drive: WD Blue Caviar SATA3 1TB
Case: Coolermaster Elite RC-372
PSU: Thermaltake OEM 500W
DVD Drive: SATA DVD-RW Lite-On
Extra Fans: Coolermaster 120mm System Case Fan x1

PLEASE EVALUATE! and let me know if there are any issues with this build!

Thanks,

Solution
i wouldnt get an i3, just...no

here is what would work well

motherboard:ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3
cpu:amd fx6300
gpu:msi or other brand 7790
ram: kingston 4gb kit

see how that goes for your budget

In what workloads? Multithreaded AMD will kill it, but games usually don't even use four threads, let alone six. If they do, most of the work is still on 1-2.

I'll trust those with objective benchmarks.

6 threads no(not yet), 4 yes. As you very well know things advance very quickly and 2 cores will be completely obsolete like single cores are now. Alot of games use 4 cores now as do other programs like photoshop and whatnot. You can trust internet numbers or you can trust personal real world observation like I do, either way its his decision, I'm only here to offer my advice and opinion.

For 30 more dollars, get this build instead of that one. The 7750 is much better than a 6670. Also the XFX PSU is much better than the ThermalTake one.

I trust blind testing. There's sooooo much bias available to anyone looking at two systems in front of them - you've decided the answer before you even sit down.

Also, the i3 cores are a lot faster.

Ive owned Intel and AMD. And its not just a sit down test, I've had my FX4300 paired by an i5 build for months and my system runs better as a matter of fact, even my roommate would owns the i5 would say the same. My gpu is quite a bit better so gaming is an obvious bias but all other applications are about as equal as it can get, the Intel is just more epensive.

I think we've gotten a bit entrenched in our positions...

There's a lot that the GPU can do, plus other things like HDD and how well optimized your system is.

For now, I'm ignoring unscientific non-blind 'testing'. Show me an article where someone has put people in front of two otherwise identical systems and asked them which they prefer, then I will consider it.

I think the question that should be asked of the OP is if he intends to OC. If so, an FX chip is probably the better option. If not, for gaming the i3 wins.

And a GPU does help ALOT yes, but with general processing and low demand games like WoW they are similar. My roommate and I both have the same exact SSD and 7200rpm HDDs. Really, Im not trying to be a turd or argue in any way whatsoever I'm just saying the honest to god observation I've personally had between AMD and Intel, I have no bias toward either. No hard feelings I hope.

Yeah power draw is kind of a.....especially when you get into OCing which is where the AMD is really gunna shine. You gotta think future too, while the i3 is fine now it will soon be what the core 2 duo is now before you know it. The only thing is that article shows the i3 as the same price as my fx4300 and I know for a fact my CPU can AT LEAST match the i3 for gaming.

lol +1 on the OPs dad comment. But like I said articles can go by numbers, but if my fx4300 can go blow for blow with an i5 Id put it up against an i3 anyday of the week.

Nice, my dad just got an i7 build for his machine shops gibbscam2013 cad program. His old pentium 4 machine kept taking a crap in the middle of programming lol. Still though youre right, an i3 would be good if hes still just gunna play minecraft like he said. But farcry3 is soooo gooood :)

I have included the single channel RAM because it would give him the ability to go for 8GB of ram by buying just one extra stick.

Also the performance of the single channel RAM is not that much affected in a Intel Ivy Bridge platform. I know two RAMs are faster but the Single RAM would do fine until he decides to drop in another 4GB of RAM which I consider the sweet spot for gaming. That is why I went with the single channel memory.

Thanks for all the responses...

This is exactly what I thought... and so now it's all down to what my dad thinks...

With changing parts around, apart from the CPU, I thought everything else would be fine...

And if I go for the AMD build, I can afford to add in 8GB of RAM. Other than that... the build stays the same, but I'm still unsure about it.

I don't think I'll be able to get the FX-6300 anyway - and maybe hexa-core is a bit too much...

For the intel build, it's definitely the i3, but for AMD, it's either the A8-5600K or the FX-4300.

At the moment I don't intend to overclock, but I don't know about the future.

in all honesty with the system your building its pretty much going to be a one off build, not the best components, just go for an amd 4300, spend cash on a better gpu and be done with it, plus you dont need a 1tb hdd, 500gb with save you cash especially if your buying from msy.com.au and 500gb is plenty, i had about 200 movies stored on my laptop which held 500gb and it still wasnt full plus about 10 games, and even opt for a shaw case over a coolermaster to again save cash to go towards a better gpu
