I'm currently in the process of buying the parts for my new PC FINALLY. Today I bought the Intel Core i7 920 from Micro Center. I ended up only paying 199.99 just like they advertised. So I'm pretty happy I was able to get a hold of a i7 920 at that price. Seeing as how they are 270+ on pretty much any internet company's websites.

I plan on posting updates in this thread as I buy each part, piece by piece to keep everyone updated on how my build is coming along. I also am going to post pictures of the parts I buy after I buy them. I'll also post a picture of my PC once I'm finished with building it.

Here's a list of parts I have already bought for this build

CPU - Intel Core i7 920

Case - COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC

(PSU) - COOLER MASTER UCP RS700-AAAAA3 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Power Supply

MOBO - ASRock X58 Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard 169.99

RAM - CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model - 139.99

Currently I have spent a total of $829.04

The total amount of money I have spent includes shipping and everything as well.

Here's a list of the stuff I still need to buy
A new HD
A new OS
A HSF
A new GPU

At this point I will most likely have my system up and running within the next 2 weeks basically right after I'm back from vacation. It really depends on if my current HD will end up being able to just work after I hook it up in my new system after taking it out of my old computer. My current HD has Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit on it. So I think it SHOULD technically work, but I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, what clock speed would I be able to overclock my i7 920 too running just on air. Also what clock speed would I be able to get it to using liquid cooling. Although I'll most likely end up just using air. Keep in mind though that I don't really want to overclock it loads though cause I want my system to still be stable.

Some parts i would think about getting

IMO, the case with very good air flow is the Antec 1200. It keeps every component cool, even the hard drives and it does it quietly.

Over clocking depends on the CPU, HSF, the surrounding temperature outside of the case and the quality of the computer case. If the case has and will maintain a good air flow, you will be able to achieve a higher clock speeds.

Update Everyone !!!

Tonight at about 9pm central time I ordered my new case, along with a power supply unit (PSU) below I will list the new parts I ordered tonight.

Computer Case - COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC

Power Supply Unit (PSU) - COOLER MASTER UCP RS700-AAAAA3 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Power Supply

I ordered them from Newegg and I got them as a combo deal so I saved 30 bucks. So I ended up paying 260USD plus some change for my case and PSU. Also just so everyone knows I don't plan to overclock my i7 until after I've had it for awhile and by then I'll already have been able to buy a much nicer PSU.

Anyways though guys what type of HDD do you think I should pick out? I want one thats 100 gigs (Roughly) and is also a decent quality HDD I want it to be a fast one obviously. :)

Also if anyone has any Motherboard suggestions please feel free to share :)

That's plain stupid to not overclock the i7 920. You probably new to this and doesn't know much about overclocking I assume.

Are you scared your chip won't last long that's why no overclocking for a while?

Also, what size is your monitor? What resolution? Do you play games? Answer these questions to obtain a recommendation for video card.

When you overclock, you need an aftermarket heatsink. Look into the core contact freezer + additional charge for 1366 bracket. For total of 35 dollars after rebate. One of the best coolers right now.

The ASrock motherboard suggested above is not that good, some people had problems with it, read some articles.

The ASRock x58 Extreme is the cheapest good x58 motherboard available. It got a good review here.
There are two other ASRock models (x58 Deluxe and x58 Supercomputer) that got less good reviews so be careful.

For $30 this Coolermaster Hyper 212 is a good CPU cooler.

The Samsung F3 is the best deal in HDDs right now

That is why I asked for his monitor size, resolution. See if he needs to overclock for his video card.

You said "If a cpu's performance fits your needs", so that's a "If". He never said clearly it will fit his needs, he just said he might not overclock it until he used it a while, and depending on his other system parts like video card, that will decide to overclock or not because CPU might bottleneck. Also, if he is gaming or not.

Sadly your statement is a waste of time when you didn't read my post above entirely.

I think Outlander was more referring to the fact that you called him stupid for not overclocking rather than commenting on whether or not he should overclock.

I read your post in detail and understood it well enough .
I just happened to think you are wrong

Now I think you are wrong and ignorant

Actually the reason I don't plan on overclocking it for awhile is simply because the CPU is plenty good enough at stock speeds for what I am going to be using it for. I'm fully aware you can overclock these chips as high as 3.8Ghz on just air alone because I've seen plenty of other people do it. But basically I have no intrest in stressing the CPU any extra beyond what I need it for, until I feel its time too. Because basically I plan on keeping this CPU for around a year and a half so I'll probably end up overclocking it when other CPU'S start becoming faster.

Also thank you to everyone else for their suggestions.

Its still may be worth installing an aftermarket cpu cooler if it fits your budget .

The stock cooler works fine , but a larger cooler can be quieter because of the larger fan. One of the best updates i ever did on my pc was getting a scythe Ninja . Its huge but the fan hardly ever even spins up to a level where you can hear it with my OC'ed C2D

I think they Stopped making the Ninja because it was designed for really hot P4's so its actually a bit too big , but the Mugen is similar. Not sure if theres an LGA 1366 mount though
Also have a look at http://www.silentpcreview.com/ for hardware reviews on low noise components

Yeah I'll be able to one within the next week roughly. Next Friday I get my next pay check so I'll be ordering my MOBO and my RAM and most likely I'll go ahead and get a aftermarket CPU cooler. For the time being I plan on using my current GPU and HDD in my new build. Simply because I don't want to buy a new GPU until I get about 300 bucks or so to blow on one. Plus my current CPU isn't totally horrible but its also not good by any means lol....

My current GPU is a Geforce 8800 GT, and thats also one of the other big reasons I don't have any interest in overclocking my CPU until I can afford a better PSU and GPU.

Aww how sad you think I'm ignorant, big deal. Why you didn't reply to my comments, here it is again. I'm wrong? Try again it's you that's wrong

That is why I asked for his monitor size, resolution. See if he needs to overclock for his video card.

Also to original poster, you didn't answer my questions. Said it twice this third time. Posts from above.

New question: why did you get the 932 RC case, when you are not overclocking? Just for good looking? Don't you think that's wasting money, you could get a better GPU and got an antec 900 case or so.

What problems has that AsRock had? Iv'e read a few reviews on that board...one even done here at tomshardware, and that board got good reviews. I don't usually go by the reviews on newegg, but even there people had good things to say about that board.

The AsRock had a problem on Tom's review on overclocking, if I remember correctly it just broke down. (It was a review with many other boards, I believe i remember correctly) Also, it was just a heads up, and I would suggest go with a more reliable company don't just go with the cheapest stuff. Asus or gigabyte is quite good, again just a suggestion.

It's really luck, because you can always get a bad board regardless of brand/company ...
edit: remember to read my post above original poster have a few questions also im surprised you got the i7 920 for just 199!! do you know what stepping it is?

I think you missed my post.

There were no problems with the x58 extreme:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cheap-x58-motherboard,2368-3.html

Its the x58 supercomputer that failed overclocking:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/x58-motherboard-i7,2252-20.html

Scarily that mimics the newegg reviews.

Coolermaster Hyper 212 $30 no MIR, no additional bracket.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

Also that Asrock supercomputer overclockig problem was resolved in newer revisions of the board, or some bios voltage tweeks on the older model.
