There is no such thing like "future proof" that lasts for more than a couple years - and each year the gap is shorter. I built a rig with GTX 970 two years ago. A year and a half later NVIDIA goes to media and BOOM! announces GTX 1070 almost double the performance for the same price (fak me, right?).
I mean, it may not be future proof for gaming. The build is still capable of deal with the latest games at max settings etc.. history history.

I'm currently studying applied mathematics in college and we do a lot of computer simulation with the guys from the computer science. My rig has a core i5, but mostly of the simulations are run in the university since some labs has dedicated machines for such operations.

I had some classes with programming language and the core i5 dealt very well with the tasks. Even laptops can do pretty well the job.
Video editing in computer science? Never seen it before, but ok.

I'm not saying the core i5 is better, I'm saying the CPU is more than good to go for the daily homework. Your build is just fine and good to go. Just put at least 8GB since you may have a lot of browser tabs, files and programs running at the same time.

Good build.
Just an FYI, the Ryzen 1700 comes with a decent wraith spire cooler. I'm using a different wraith on my FX-8350 and, after replacing the thermal pad with good paste, I was surprised at how well it keeps my CPU cool.
If you do get an aftermarket cooler, remember to get one that blows down onto the board. Those tower coolers that blow parallel to the MB are great for CPU cooling but horrible for the VRs.
