summer's here emminna build a new box. here is what i have already purchased:

case: Thermaltake Armor VA8003SWA
psu: Silverstone Zeus ST65ZF
watercool: Swiftech Apex Ultra with MCW30 chipset waterblock
gpu: eVGA 8800GTX 768MB 768-P2-N831-AR
sound: Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic
ups: APC BX-1500 (865watts)
hd: western digital raptor 150 WD1500ADFD

what's missing is the cpu, mobo and ram.
the target oc is 3.8ghz(desired level), but it has to be at least 3.6ghz (minimum level)
I'm leaning toward e6700 and ds3 at this time, i'm using an asus p5b right now, one of the first revisions, and it doesn't oc very well.
i don't believe in sli, and i don't believe in ram lantencies.
sli entails too much money, too much work, and things could go wrong at too many places, its concept should stay with distributed computing efforts and not personal computer graphics rendering.
ram latencies.. i'm so tired of people talking bout 4445ms mumbojumbo as if couple ms will make salient differences. the bottleneck in pc's lies with the hd, and not ram, gimme a hd that can rival the speed of memory, and then we'll talk about ram latencies. until then, ddr2 is just as good as ddr3.
speaking of hd, i will upgrade to like a raid 0 or raid 5 config when i find a good lsi logic card.

so what do you guys think? should i go with e6700 and ds3? what kind of ram should i buy? (i've heard that ds3's doesn't work well with certain ram sticks?)

If you really like it that way, you should order it from intel
Joke apart, most new batches will top at 3.3/3.4 GHz
If you're lucky you can reach these 3.3/3.4 Ghz, if you're very very lucky, you'll reach 3.8/4GHz, or if you're out of luck, you'll stick at 3GHz

That's it, dot.

Or you can ask someone to sell you his good batch chipset

I don't see any other way to get you your "desired minimal level"

I'm not convinced you need a 6700.....a 6600 *should* do the trick. I do think the DS3 will hit that, PROVIDED you do an aftermarket cooling on the northbridge. The DS3 is a GREAT board, but the northbridge does get hot, and at those speeds it is an absolute MUST, or you won't even get near those speeds. However, that being said.......to hit a minimum of 3.6 ghz, you'll need a 405 FSB with a 6600 and a 9x multiplier. 405 is a piece of cake for the DS3. As for RAM, going to 405 FSB means that DDR2-800 will be running at 810....which is fine. But if you can, you should either consider getting DDR2-900 (PC7200) or get some RAM with Micron D9's just in case you wanna push higher. The G.Skill PC6400 HZ's.....black heat spreaders are great and affordable too. Otherwise, something with a higher speed. Don't worry about timings, 5-5-5-15 is fine.

Since you'll be using H2O cooling, you should hit 3.6 on a 6600. Off the top of my head, my guess is your vCore will probably be somewhere between 1.375v and 1.425v, vMCH will be +0.1, vFSB will be +0.1v, vDIMM will probalby be +0.2v or +0.3v (depending on which RAM you get), and vPCI-e will be +0.1v to hit 3.6 ghz or higher. Those are definitely safe levels, a bit on the higher side, but will probably be needed to hit your target.

Hope that helps!

You do not need the E6700. I have a E6600 batch code L646G494 that will easliy hit 3.7Ghz. Under load my temps are around 45c. Don't waste the extra money for the E6700.
