In an office with rugs, how best to prevent static from killing my machine?

My new office fried my build. Basically just touched the power button when sleeping and it fried the motherboard.

Built a new machine but need to take the right precautions to prevent this expensive mistake from happening again.

Solution
First, make sure you are using a grounded outlet... NOT polarized crap.

Put the case on the desk, not under it.

Touch something else metal that is not attached to the PC then touch the case before you touch the buttons, if your system is properly grounded, the static current will exit via the ground and not the components.
