Hi all, I'm new to this forum and I've come here 'cause of my WD Passport Ultra 1 TB.
About 6 months ago I've encrypted my drive with BitLocker (windows 10) and about 2 weeks ago I've decided to decrypt it.
The bitlocker process got stuck at 86.4% and then it gave the error and said me to try to do chkdsk.
After I unplugged the drive it was no more recognized by the pc, but the drive was there (in fact there was the option to expell it, but it wasn't showing up in the file explorer!).
I started to read some forums and guides, so I started a repair-bde process with the recovery key; after the process was completed my drive show up again but it was stuck at the same time with the same error. Then I tried to open some files and all of them were totally corrupted, only some photos and some .txt files were readable.
I'm totally depressed because I lost a lot of important documents and photos...

I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm Italian.

You could clone the drive and try working on the clone to recover the data, however this does not necessarily mean that you'd be successful. If the drive is in good health, something might have corrupted the partition table or the file system which could have led to the issues you're experiencing now.

As for the sound, if it was something like chirping, this is normal when the drive is under load. Check out this article: How to tell if the noise or sound the drive is making is normal.
Hey there, Carlo.

This sounds truly unfortunate indeed 🙁
Have you ever experienced any issues with the drive itself before that happened?

Basically since this is a Windows program, I'd advise you to get in touch with Microsoft, to see if the guys there can come up with a solution on how to dencrypt it. However if there's nothing you can do about that, I'm afraid that professional help might be your only option in this case, so you could go for a data recovery company: WD Data Recovery Partners.

I know it's a bit late for that, but please never keep important information on a single drive. You should always have a backup copy, because anything can happen, no matter how reliable an HDD might be.

I hope you're able to get you photos and documents back! Fingers crossed!

Is there any way to clone the entire drive to another one or some sort of other unencryption tools?
By the way, my hard drive started to do a strange sound when the files got corrupted (not like cliking or beeping at all), it's very rare, but every once in a while it makes like a scraping/scratching sound.
Anyway I've just checked the SMART status and it says GOOD so I don't think that the drive is going to die soon.
