Hello everyone. I'm a first time poster here, and I hope I'm posting this in the right section.

I've used this tom's Hardware for a long time for doing research on hardware issues and general information and benchmarks. Just never had a need to post in the forums till now. For a long time I haven't had any strange problems with my own PC's that I couldn't fix on my own, but this problem is really unusual and a complete mystery to me. I'm sure there are people out there with more pressing issues than mine who need help, but if anyone has time to take a look at this, that would be great.

Anyway, I just built a new Desktop PC which I'm using to post this message. Here are the specs:

Windows 8.1 with all updates performed
Asus X99-Deluxe LGA2011-3 with the latest BIOS (Just updated it today) Version 0801
Intel i7 5930K LGA2011-3 15MB Cache Haswell-E at 3.5ghz (no overclocking settings have been set)
ZOTAC Geforce 780 3GB (no overclocking settings have been set) running on the latest drivers from the NVidia website
Crucial Micron 32 GB DDR4 PC-17200 at 2133Mhz (not overclocked)
Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound card
Samsung SSD EVO 840 500GB
4 Internal 3TB hard disks connected by a single SATA power cable, and 4 SATA data cables
OCZ Silencer MKIII 750W Power Supply

Here's the description of the problem. When I've left the computer sitting over-night, and turn it on for the first time the next day, after I logon to Windows, about 10 minutes later, basically likes it's scheduled in fact, the computer does what seems to be a hard reset, almost as though I hit the reset button. I hear a click, indicating the power has been shut off, the lights all go black, and it just reboots with the lights all coming back on.

I tried plugging it into another surge protector, but the same thing happens. It happens regardless of whatever I'm doing on the PC at the time. It happens even if I'm not running any programs. I tried just booting the PC, and letting it idle, and 10 minutes later, it rebooted without any error messages, or warning.

Now here's the really strange part. After it reboots, and I logon again, the PC runs fine for hours with no issues at all. I can run games, programs, watch movies, browse, anything. But, after I shut it down, and come back to it the next day, the exact same thing happens. This has been going on for about a week now and I've reproduced the issue every day.

So far I've done a lot of reading on various forums and Asus's home page and couldn't find anything specific about my problem. I've updated the BIOS. I checked the temperatures while doing a Prime95 Torture test and I ran the Windows 8.1 built in memory test. The memory test found no problems. The highest the temperature got while running the torture test with all 6 cores at 100% for several minutes was about 69 degrees. The idling temperatures of all 6 cores are between 27 and 30 or so. The internal temperature of my case right now is showing at 24 degrees. I played Metro Last Light for almost 5 hours straight last night after it rebooted (I'm not exactly proud to admit that) and there were no issues at all.

I checked Windows Event viewer. I got the Event 41, Kernel Power event at the time the PC Reboots every time it rebooted. That last one was at 7:48pm this evening. And it's now 9:53 and the PC hasn't rebooted or had any problems since that time. Every time, I get the same event. 11 times so far, since I built the PC. Which is to say, I've booted the PC 11 times since I put it together, and it's done this strange reboot 11 times.

The XML information is as follows:

There are other errors and warnings listed in event viewer, but I have no idea which ones could possibly be relevant. The time stamps don't seem to indicate anything really... the errors and warnings occur after the PC boots, but there's nothing right before it reboots. Here's a list of all the events for today, since I booted the PC the first time:

The Critical error is around 7:48 in the time stamps. I started the PC at about 7:38. So you can see it's almost exactly 10 minutes when it reboots. And it's always the same time frame... which to me indicates something specific is going on here.

The DeviceSetupManager event is re-occurring but it's related to a recent Windows Update, or so my research has led me to believe. Apparently Windows 8.1 keeps looking for updates for devices on startup, and fails to do so after logon, and creates a bunch of errors as a result. The ones that I'm not familiar with though are the e1rexpress and e1dexpress code 27 errors, or Perflib 1023, or Event log 6008. Also, the Disk 153, and Search 3036 errors... no idea what those are or what's causing them. From what I read, 6008 is indicating that the previous shut down was unexpected. Even though I did shut down the PC yesterday.

Basically the PC performs as expected in benchmarks. It scored about 13,980 in 3dMark 11. The only issue is this strange reboot.

Are there any issues with ASUS AI SUITE III, or Intel Rapid Storage Technology programs that anyone is aware of? I have these two programs installed and running but I'm not familiar with them and whether or not they cause any strange crashing issues.

Mainly, I'm hoping someone out there has a similar hardware configuration and knows how this problem is resolved. It's mostly just an annoyance at the moment... but I think like most people... when you spend a couple of paychecks building a new PC, you kinda want it to run perfectly.... I've been saving a long time for this PC... and so it's really disappointing to be experiencing issues with it. 🙁

Anyway, thank you kindly in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

Yep, you guys know your stuff. Or at least, I think you guys were on the right track. There's a very specific option that needs to be changed. I found another thread on Tom's hardware after I created this thread... the strange thing was I read lots of threads before posting with similar topics, and hadn't found the one with the solution. I just saw it after I finished posting and clicked on it and then followed the steps and gave it a try. Turns out it's the solution. So I got lucky.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/4411-73-computer-reboots-minutes-runs

After I read it I followed the steps in the article it links. I pretty sure that's what fixed my problem though I made two changes yesterday. Updated the BIOS and made the changings to the Power Options. But I'm pretty sure it's the change to the Power Options that fixed the problem.

The option is called "Turn on Fast Startup (recommended)", which can be found here:

Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable

By the way...I love the irony in the name of the option "Turn on Fast Startup (RECOMMENDED!)... recommended.... jeez. So most people who don't know what they are doing would leave that option on thinking it's supposed to help somehow... there's no mention of any risks or issues with it though.

Anyway, disabling that option is what you want to do if you're having the same problem I was. And that apparently doing so disables the Hybrid Startup feature, which will impact your startup time... at the cost of a reboot 10 minutes into using your computer. I think I'll go with the longer startup, thank you very much Microsoft....

Anyway, just in case anyone out there comes across this thread and is experiencing the same problem, here is a direct link to the article with steps for a solution and some information about the problem:

http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1653065/windows-wont-shut-fix-issue.html

And here are the steps followed: (I'm not taking credit for this solution, someone much smarter than me figured this one out) :)

How to Disable Hybrid Shutdown in Windows 8?
To disable Hybrid Shutdown in Windows 8 to resolve the shutdown issue, steps below must be followed using an administrator account:

1. Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account on which Hybrid shutdown is to be disabled.
2. Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop screen.
3. Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
4. From the displayed options, click Settings.
5. On the Settings pane, click Control Panel.
6. On the opened Control Panel window, click System and Security.
7. On the System and Security window, click Power Options from the right pane.
8. On the Power Options window, click Choose what the power buttons do option from the left pane.
9. On the System Settings window, click Change settings that are currently unavailable link to enable the advanced options.
10. From the enabled options under Shutdown settings section, uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) checkbox to disable Hybrid Shutdown.

I gotta hand it to Microsoft.... they sure know how to make things complicated.... :) Anyway, thank you very much for the responses. I hope this thread helps anyone else out there. And I sincerely I hope anyone else having this problem finds this thread or the other one before sifting through about 100 other threads like I did... Seems there are lots of threads detailing problems but very few actually giving solutions. :)
